I am in the process of becoming a certified yoga instructor. I have read plenty of books on yoga, but this is the only one I found that specifically addresses the art of teaching yoga. It is obvious that Stephanie Keach has put a lot of thought into this book - it covers everything a beginning or a seasoned pro may need to know in order to teach yoga safely and professionally. I was very impressed with the amount of information present in this book! There is so much here - ethics of a yoga teacher, the business of yoga, what you need for a basic studio, asanas, meditation, pranayama techniques, anatomy, etc., etc. This book is the perfect supplement to my training. I thank Ms. Keach for a wise and enlightened book! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching yoga or deepening their own home practice. Well done! Namaste!

My hometown yoga instructor had to have her own copy after viewing mine. She said the book contained 20 years of wealth of knowledge, without sorting thru many volumes of books.
Very specific and very well thought out. Not just for a teacher, for anyone developing a personal practice. Daryl Crisp

Teaching Yoga: The Big Picture,
By PMW "Listener of the Body's Wisdom" (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Yoga Handbook, An Inspirational Reference for Teaching and Home Practice (Spiral-bound)
This book is a great overview for yoga teachers, especially those just getting started -- from ethics to class sequencing, basic (70) poses to know, 120 common ailments and recommended practices & contraindications, muscles you need to know, and business considerations (how to charge, how to market, & how to protect yourself).
She offers a wonderful appendix which includes sample liability releases, student questionaires, and expense & record keeping forms. Also, there is an abbreviated Sanskrit glossary of some of the most common poses/phrases & terminology. All of this in the light of integrity, adherence to the yamas & niyamas in your personal and professional life. If a teacher training course had to use only have one book, this one would come pretty close to fitting the bill. At 238 pages, nothing super in depth obviously, but wow, what a great overview! A definite must for any new (or aspiring) yoga teacher.

This is a fantastic book - very comprehensive and inspiring though I was surprised to hear that yoga teacher training in europe takes 5 years!. In the U.K. you can do a distance learning course in 6 months and there is no professional body to regulate teaching standards etc as far as I know. (Also I do think it is possible to be a good yoga teacher without spending a year studying anatomy as long as you know your asanas and your limits and respect your students). This book is a real asset to anyone who is a new teacher and has re-awakened my interest in yoga as a way of life.

This book is a favorite in my library of Yoga related books. It is a wonderful reference book and truly a great guide for beginners and for teachers looking to refresh.
The book has everything: a brief history on what Yoga is, how it has come to be in the United States and it also includes in-depth overview of manjor yoga postures and modifications and variations, as well as a chapter on anatomy, meditation, setting up your home yoga space and much more. It is also a great reference for anyone interested in starting their own space/studio. A great guide for starting your small yoga business and helpful tips. My original copy is a bit beat up now with notes, marks and such. Almost time to get a new one for my library. I find myself recommending this as a great guide for anyone wanting a home yoga practice or for those intersted in training. Wonderful!

I love this book! I have practiced yoga off and on for several years and have recently committed to my practice. I bought this book as a means to help me at home with my practice and to also help me understand better the process and essence of yoga. I think it is well written, understandable and it makes me want to do yoga every day!

This book is an excellent asset to have in the book collection as either a yoga instructor or home practice enhancer. A lot of solid information is addressed in straightforward terms. This book is all meat, no grissle. Everything from breathing techniques, meditations, to a solid list of poses beautifully demonstrated is in this book. Even the poses are shown in 3-4 different approaches. It will be a keeper in my precious library of resources!
