Book Description

June 1, 1996 0865163170 978-0865163171
A Handbook of Latin Literature (reprint of the 1954 edition) is a concise, yet comprehensive survey of Latin literature that provides brief biographical information about ancient authors from the earliest to the Christian and pagan writers, analyses of the most prominent works, and the historical and cultural context. It also places the works alongside their contemporaries, rates their relative importance in their own times and later periods, and explores their influence on subsequent literatures and Western Civilization. Each known work is discussed and analyzed in terms of content, chronology, genre, significance, meaning, genetic relationship to other works, and ancient and modern scholarship.

- has an index of names, places, and terms

From the Back Cover

"It may be questioned whether this large field has ever been covered so fully and in such handy form; Professor Rose analyzes the contents of almost every single work or book written within a long work . . . His book in fact has its value as a dictionary of Latin literature besides that of a history." Times (London) Literary Supplement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reference, August 31, 2003

This review is from: A Handbook of Latin Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Death of St. Augustine (Paperback)
Having studied Latin all throughout high school, I was thoroughly proficient in grammar and mythology. However, I always felt lacking when it came to the wealth of Latin literature available. Studying Vergil's epic, the Aeneid, took a year in itself. At this rate, I would never become substantially familiar with Latin literature.

Then I was introduced to A Handbook of Latin Literature, a comprehensive reference of all significant authors and works. While the degree of detail makes this book no easy read, the same factor makes it extremely useful, as I can just look up any author or work when I come across an unfamiliar reference and learn everything I need to know. For the Latin scholar, I highly recommend this book as a collection of facts about literature. For the rest of us, A Handbook of Latin Literature serves as an excellent reference book for a topic that is too often ignored.
