Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This guide book to mathematics contains in handbook form the fundamental working knowledge of mathematics which is needed as an everyday guide for working scientists and engineers, as well as for students. Easy to understand, and convenient to use, this guide book gives concisely the information necessary to evaluate most problems which occur in concrete applications. In the newer editions emphasis was laid on those fields of mathematics that became more important for the formulation and modeling of technical and natural processes, namely Numerical Mathematics, Probability Theory and Statistics, as well as Information Processing. For the 5th edition, the chapters "Computer Algebra Systems" and "Dynamical Systems and Chaos" were fundamentally revised, updated and expanded. In the chapter "Algebra and Discrete Mathematics" a section on "Finite Fields and Shift Registers" was added.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Ronald W. Satz on February 4, 2009

This work is, by far, the best mathematics handbook I've purchased. It is extremely well organized and well-written. The typeography is very clear. In the 1153 pages there are 745 figures and 142 tables. All areas of mathematics are covered in detail: arithmetic, functions, geometry, linear algebra, algebra and discrete mathematics, differentiation, infinite series, integral calculus, differential equations, calculus of variations, linear integral equations, functional analysis, vector analysis and vector fields, function theory, integral transformations, probability theory and mathematical statistics, dynamical systems and chaos, optimization, numerical analysis, computer algebra systems, and tables. A detailed bibliography and index are provided. Recommended for all mathematicians, scientists, and engineers!

The book is showing its age - but only a little. It contains fascinating summaries of mathematics old and new. No proofs, but tantalising leads and snilppets that are useful in themselves, as intended, but good prompts for the mathematically curious, or as in my case nostalgic, to follow up.

There are some things missing I would have hoped included, but others were there that I had never expected.

Warmly recommended, particularly for unreconstructed nerds like me.

This is the best mathematics handbook I have ever come across. I have the 2007 edition and is thinking of buying the newer 2015 edition that has just come out. But the fond size used in the book is a little too small for me. I wish the publisher could print the handbook in larger fond.

The handbook of mathematics is a great book. Essentially, it is a catalog of several areas presented very concisely. Recommended for engineers and scientists who use mathematics occasionally.

Perfect for anyone who needs a strong mathematics handbook - physicists, engineers, or CS people, this means you. There are no (or few) derivations, but all the techniques you need are here.

Best handbook on mathematics. Both concise and comprehensive. Yet, there are some mistakes on basic physical examples such as classifying power as a vector quantity.
