3.0 out of 5 stars Light on design calculation, October 5, 2010

This review is from: Handbook of Mechanical Engineering Calculations, Second Edition (Hardcover)
I bought this book at Amazon.com. It is a thick book with lots of calculations. Although it's divided into four sections - power generation, plant and facilities engineering, environmental control, and design engineering, the pages covering design engineering are less than one third of the total book. The examples used in the book are not very well organized. Overall, it's not a very helpful handbook for me.

In regards to its treatment of heat exchanger design:

(1)There is no way that the temperature change affected is inverse to tube length. (2)The temperature change affected can easily be greater than the temperature gradient if: (i)it is truely counter-current as in single-pass on both tube and shell side, and(ii) the heat flows, Cp*m, are matched so that there is not a pinch.
