Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jam-packed with information vital to every practicing neuroradiologist. It serves best to tuck this paperback book into a laboratory coat, so that quick consultation on patient evaluation, clinical management, and surgical approach is readily at hand...a comprehensive companion for all those in the clinical neurosciences."--American Journal of Neuroradiology

"The Handbook of Neurosurgery has been a kind of bible for neurosurgical residents. This book is an invaluable companion for the neurosurgical resident from internship through completion. It is a reference for quick up-to-date information on anatomical and physiological facts, differential diagnosis, and currently accepted principles of clinical management. The sixth edition has new features that distinguish it from prior editions. The most important of these is the incorporation of the concepts of evidence-based medicine. ..Highlighted areas...signal a condensed summary, key point, or clinical pearl...very helpful for quick reference. This new edition is the best there is for quick referencing. Its broad, yet detailed coverage of the most commonly encountered neurosurgical problems makes this book keep the title's promise--this is truly a handbook of neurosurgery. The Handbook of Neurosurgery is a must-have for all neurosurgical residents, and its price at $79 is a bargain, especially when considering its application and frequent use."--Journal of Neurosurgery

"Up-to-date.. The information is presented in a very clear, condensed and comprehensive manner and can therfore be understood quickly if necessary. This handbook is a "good must buy" for every neurosurgeon, not only the resident, because it helps us to have a quick and reliable reference, especially in cases that we usually do not treat in our daily routine."--Neurosurgical Review

5th editon reviews:

"The first book all neurosurgical trainees are encouraged to buy...covers the breadth of neurosurgery with key points clearly identified...an excellent source of quick reference...an essential purchase..." --British Journal of Neurosurgery

"The closest thing to a 'bible' of neurosurgery. . . Comprehensive and covers the full gamut of elective and emergent neurosurgery. . .the index is unsurpassed in its thoroughness and logical references to book contents. . .error-free. . .useful tool. . . Compact size and well-summarized" --Mayo Clinic, www.neurosurgery.org

"Although it has more than 900 pages, the book is small and can be kept in the pocket. It has been designed to accompany neurosurgical residents in their daily activities and serves beautifully its purpose at a reasonable price." --European Neurology

More About the Author

Mark Greenberg (1955- ) was born in Chicago, Illinois. In college, he majored in electrical engineering where he gained early exposure to computers. He attended Northwestern University Medical School, and it was there, during his cardiovascular surgery rotation, that he was given a little red book that contained information on drugs, cardiac angiograms, and even particulars about what medications each attending liked and disliked. It was at this time that he decided that he would produce a book like that for neurosurgery. In 1983 Dr. Greenberg began his neurosurgical residency in Cincinnati, Ohio. In November of that year he bought the first IBM PC model - with no hard drive, and the memory was measured in kilobytes. Work on the first edition of the Handbook of Neurosurgery began on this computer, and later migrated to the Mac platform because of superior graphics capabilities.

Early versions of the book were printed on the neurosurgery department's photocopier at night, and distributed to the other residents. The first real edition was published in 1990 by his own publishing company, Greenberg Graphics - a name he made up when a commercial printer asked him for the name of his company. The first edition had a print run of 660 copies, selling for $19.95 each. Without the internet and with no advertising budget, the existence of the book spread by word-of-mouth, and after successfully selling all 660 copies, a real print run of a second edition was made in 1991. As sales increased he was able to partner with Thieme Medical publishers in 2005 for the 5th edition, and could finally get rid of all the pallets of books in the family garage.

The most recent version of the Handbook of Neurosurgery is the seventh edition, and is packed full of useful information critical in the day-to-day care of neurosurgical patients. This edition uses color highlights and has full color illustrations to enhance readability. Dr. Greenberg sincerely hopes it continues to fill the needs of anyone caring for these patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most useful handbook on the market, January 30, 2001
By
Wonhong David Min (Indianapolis, IN USA) - See all my reviews
I have used this Handbook of Neurosurgery since its inception over 10 years ago. In my residency training program, it is referred to as the "Bible" of Neurosurgery. The current edition continues the trend of excellence set by its predecessors. Broad in scope and utility, this single reference is all any resident needs to survive an on-call night in any neurosurgery residency training program.

The current edition is a single volume (the edition previous to this one was a two-volume set, much to the dismay of myself and fellow residents). The only negative comment that I can make is that as the book tries to encompass more and more information, it has grown larger and more unwieldy. The first and second editions could be placed into the pocket of a lab coat; this current edition's size prevents it from being easily carried on the wards.

Still, overall it is the most useful single text that any student or resident of neurosurgery could purchase, and at[the price] it is a relative BARGAIN in comparison to the other textbooks of Neurosurgery that cost upwards of $200.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and practical, May 22, 2001
Greenberg's "Handbook of Neurosurgery" is a well writen, concise and practical reference manual for the use of the non-neurosurgeon who has to deal with neurosurgical patients and their unique problems. As a part of my postgraduate trainig I worked in a Neurotrauma ward, both with brain injured and spinal injured patients. So, my knowledge of Neurosurgery was lacking. However, as I purchased this book I became more familiar with the general principles and practice of Neurosurgery.

However lacking in regard to Neuroimaging and surgical techniques, Greenberg's "Handbook of Neurosurgery" provides excelent chapters of neurointensive care, drug use, dosages and side effects, clinical tests of value, as well as comprehensive analysis of the diseases and disease processes encountered.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a terrifc book!, March 17, 2007
This review is from: Handbook of Neurosurgery (Paperback)
I bought this book before my neurosurgery rotation and I was floored at how terrific it was. Not only is there just about anything you might ever need to know about NS in it, but everything the author says it supported by research. Each chapter has an exhaustive listing of the citations. Awesome!

I knew something about NS and felt prepared from Hal Blumenfeld's "Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases," but having this small book in my pocket made all the difference. I carried it everywhere and even brought it into surgeries, and was able to quickly flip through to look up things. I learned a huge amount in a short period of time. I can easily see how this book could carry you from third year through early residency, when you graduate to other NS Thieme books.
