Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

These volumes represent the third installment of a monumental enterprise. (Vol. 1, Loons Through Flamingos , appeared in 1962; Vols. 2 and 3, Waterfowl , in 1976.) These latest volumes form the definitive reference source on North American diurnal raptors (kites, vultures, hawks, eagles, falcons, osprey), superseding A.C. Bent's Life Histories of North American Birds of Prey, published in 1938. Forty-two species are covered in telegraphic, fact-crammed style in articles of 1-50 pages or more, dealing with topics such as physical description, voice, field identification, subspecies, habitat, distribution, migration, banding status, reproduction, habits, survival, and food. Most articles are illustrated by one or more black-and-white drawings and a distribution map. Though each volume may be purchased separately, the two form a unit. Vol. 5 contains an index to both volumes and a bibliography of 2580 items. An essential set for reference collections of ornithologists, serious birders, academic libraries, and medium-sized and large public libraries. J.F. Husband, Framingham State Coll. Lib., Mass.
