A Must Have,
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
I was introduced to this great little book on a retreat last winter with Opus Dei. A number of the men there had it and I borrowed one for a while on the retreat. This is a little treasure that should be in every Catholic home.
A number of features make this one such a nice prayer book. It is compact and fits in a [...] pocket. Also it contains great pen and ink sketches and illustrations, especially for the Stations of the Cross. It has such a variety of prayers if you only had this prayer book it would be sufficient for a wide and varied prayer life. The first section of the book is a series of articles on How to Be a Better Catholic. The next section is a collect of basic prayers, the Sign of the Cross, Hail Mary, Our Father ... then the sections become more specific: Midday Prayers Evening Prayers Preparation for Mass The Eucharistic Sacrifice Prayers after Mass Communion Outside Mass Eucharistic Adoration Guide for a Good Confession Devotions to the Blessed Trinity Devotions to Our Lord Jesus Christ Devotions to the Holy Spirit Devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary Devotions to St. Joseph Various Prayers Prayers at the Time of Death Prayers for the Dead Blessings Sacraments When in Dander of Death I guarantee that if you pick up this little book, you will find yourself referring to it time and time again. It will become one of your most valued books, for help in developing your spiritual lif

Great Book But Needs Updating!,
By
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
This is a great prayerbook for Catholics and has all the essential prayers except for the Luminous Mysteries and hence this portion of it needs to be updated. The version I have has bonded leather covers and gold imprinted letters. The pages are also gilded and the fonts are also of a nice size for easy reading. I find the section on "How to be a Better Catholic" to be very useful as well as Latin versions of some of the prayers on the facing pages to the English versions. Highly recommended but they should update and include the Luminous Mysteries.

200 of the Church's most stirring prayers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
One of the best ways to grow in one's prayer life is to steep ourselves in the centuries-old Catholic devotions that represent to us Christian doctrine, divine love, and the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ. The latest edition of the Handbook of Prayers makes this effort effective by gathering in a single, compact volume the most practical prayers, devotions and blessings.Originally published in a pocket-sized 336 pages, the book has sold over 50,000 copies since its first printing in 1982. Although the expanded edition is now 600 pages, the book is inimally larger in size and thickness than the original since it is printed on Bible paper. In the new edition one can find something to suit almost any taste or occasion. It contains short sections summarizing Catholic doctrine, the Order of Mass in Latin and in English on facing pages, as are many of the prayers, and devotions to the Trinity, Christ, Mary and Joseph. The section on Catholic doctrine covers ways to live a better spiritual life through prayer and habitual spiritual practices. Especially handy is a table showing the holy days of obligation for many English-speaking countries. The Order of Mass encompasses the general liturgy, rubrics, and prefaces for various seasons, feasts and memorials, as well as a large number of prayers that can be said before and after Mass.

Timeless Book,

I first discovered this book in a chapel and it helped me to focus on my prayers. I had to buy it, and now keep it with me all the time. In here, you'll find prayers for every kind of event, emotion, celebration, difficulty, and abundant praise for our Lord. Though the prayers come from Aquinas, Augustine, St. Francis de Sales and others, the selection is terrific because you not only gain the Church fathers' wisdom and insight, they prod your own as well. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to spend more meaningful time in prayer.

GREAT PRAYER BOOK FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
This brief, yet substantial, book of prayers in an invaluable collection of Catholic prayers. There are the traditional prayers like the "Our Father" and the "Holy Rosary" but also prayers for before and after Mass, stations of the cross, devotions to the Holy Spirit and St. Joseph. Also, conveniently, there is the text of the Mass in English and Latin in the middle of the prayer book. The prayer book is beautifully bound and edited.

Great book, but...,
By Sean McKinley (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
It's definitely a great prayer book. The Handbook of Prayers contains prayers for before and after Mass, a section on How to Be a Better Catholic, various Devotions, and prayers for use during the day (among many other things). Here's the problem: if you own the Daily Roman Missal published by Our Sunday Visitor, you will find that most/all of the Handbook of Prayers is contained in it.

Excellent Guide to Catholic Faith,
By Stoked on Life (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
I used to own an older edition of this prayer book and cannot say enough about how wonderful a tool it is for anyone looking to enrich their faith or understand more about being Catholic. My only lament is that the newer version that I purchased from Amazon.com has different pages. My previous verson of this book had the beautifully thin paper found in most bibles and a nicer cover (comparable to a small leather bound bible). This one is more of a paperback but seems to have very durable pages.
All in all I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to deepen their faith in the Lord. Also, a nice feature is that the right side pages are in english, and on the left side pages the same prayer or other recitation is listed in LATIN. This is very nice for anyone wanting to understand the latin basis of Catholic worhsip before Vatican II. Also, there is a complete guide to the mass, with a detailed explanation of all of the prayers therein, to include the prayers that the celebrant (priest) prays in silence at the altar. This is great for beginners, Catechumans, Candidates, and RCIA students!

Great prayer book and resource,
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
This book has many prayers (litanies, novenas, devotions, etc.), guidelines for confession, liturgy of the Mass in Latin (like they do on EWTN), an. The only thing missing is in the Adoration section, there's a hymn called "Tantum Ergo", but it's still a great book.

BY FAR THE BEST BOOK OUT THERE!,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Handbook of Prayers (Paperback)
This book is by far the best collection of prayers. The book contains Latin and English prayers side-by-side of one another so you can follow and learn Latin. I have been looking for a book like this for five years, and it was just by mere chance I came upon this when I typed the word "prayers" in the Amazon search bar. I'm truly happy and grateful that I own such a treasure. I will advocate all Catholics/Christians to buy this book. Also, there is a Spanish edition for those Spanish readers, it's called "Oraciones Y Devociones", isbn# 0879738596
