Book Description

April 2001
The purpose of A Handbook for Preparing Graduate Papers in Music is to provide music students with some guidelines to assist in the preparation of theses, essays, dissertations, and other papers that may be written as part of their graduate program. Preparing Graduate Papers in Music includes information and examples for preparing such papers and is designed specifically to assist students in writing about music and in documenting references to music, music notation, recordings, and other musical resources. It is intended to complement guidelines provided by a university’s graduate office and the two style manuals most used by music students, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Turabian 1996) and the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA 1994).

This review is from: A Handbook for Preparing Graduate Papers in Music (Paperback)
This book seems aimed at undergraduate, rather than graduate students, in that much of the book reiterates the curriculum for Grade 12 English: how to properly construct an essay using effective rhetoric, with proper citations of footnotes and bibliography. Helpful topics include citing musical examples or specific journal sources; yet, this information is generally offered free of charge through any university library reference centre, either as resource books or on-line library links. In addition, this book does not serve well as a teaching aid, given the limited scope of discussion: missing is a list of several helpful international weblink browsers. Not all graduate students register with DDM on-line, and until there is an international databank registering all abstracts of dissertations published and in progress, students and supervisors need to check several browsers to scope the global state of graduate research, and to research academic publications, supervisors records, job prospects as well as to discover the 'hot' topics of publication beyond the dissertation. This book needs to include such information in order to bring it up to date. Save your funds, use the university library, stay organized and just get down to business.
