Editorial Reviews

Review

"Case conceptualization is the cognitive hub of the wheel of psychotherapy. It provides a framework for linking theory, the assessment of individual needs and strengths, possible techniques and change processes, and desired outcomes. This comprehensive volume draws together in one place the major perspectives on the process of case conceptualization. Eells has produced a volume that is both theoretically grounded and practical, and that will help students and professionals explore a variety of models and approaches. If you want the best of current thinking about case conceptualization, there is no better volume to own."--Steven C. Hayes, PhD, University of Nevada

"Case formulation is a necessary component of treatment planning, yet it often has been overlooked in the literature. This volume sets a standard for the field. Clear and accessible, the book is written and edited by leading authorities, and can be used both in graduate classes and by professionals. A significant feature of the second edition is the focus on cultural factors. The reader will come away with a better understanding of what case formulation is and why and how to do it."--Clara E. Hill, PhD, University of Maryland, College Park

"For many reasons, case formulation has become more topical and relevant than ever in contemporary psychotherapy practice and research. Eells has again assembled an impressive group of scholars who represent the various traditions and who are at the forefront of the field. The strength of this book remains its organization and coverage. In addition, the second edition provides complete examples of case formulation and addresses multicultural considerations. Eells has also included material that provides a critical analysis of the various presentations and of the field at large. In short, Eells has significantly advanced the ball with this new edition."--J. Christopher Muran, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, Beth Israel Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine

5.0 out of 5 stars Of all the case formulation books -- this one is the best, May 15, 2011

I made the mistake of buying all three case formulation books because the reviews seemed to be unsure about them all. Now that I have them all, this one is the best. Although Case Conceptualization and Treatment Planning: Integrating Theory With Clinical Practice is pretty good too, Clinical Case Formulations: Matching the Integrative Treatment Plan to the Client is horrible and I recommend to stay far, far away (although it has the best reviews-- this is where things get tricky).

This book is great, well researched, different authors who know what they are talking about wrote each of the chapters, etc. It has 14 chapters:

1. History and current status of psychotherapy
2. Multicultural considerations in case formulation
3. the pscyhoanalytic approach to case formulation
4. the core conflictual relationship theme: a basic case formulation method
5. configurational analysis: states of mind, person schemas ad the control of ideas and affect
6. cyclical maladaptive patterns: case formulation in time-limited dynamic psychotherapy
7. the plan formulation method
8. case formulation in interpersonal psychotherapy
9. plan analysis
10. cognitive-behavioral case formulation
11. case formulation in DBT for borderline personality disorder
12. case formulation for behavioral and cognitive therapies: a problem-solving perspective
13. case formulation in emotion-focused therapy
14. comparing methods: where is the common ground?

Chapters have authors like Hans Strupp and Leslie Greenberg. And this book is cheaper that the awful book. Basically, I am trying to save people from making the mistake of buying the book grounded in hippy-dippy psychological science in favor of them buying the book grounded in real psychological science, and it is half the price
