The only book you'll ever need on logical database design.,
By michael.kettelhut@sap-ag.de (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
I adopted this as the text for graduate MIS courses in database design/logical data modeling almost 10 years ago. Still the best working reference on relational databases from logical design through physical issues on indexes, tuning, etc. The only reference book I recommend to anyone needing to understand relational database design. M.C. Kettelhut, Ph.D.

The best on REAL relational design,
By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
The core information in this book is as valid as it has ever been, even if it's 10 years old. The rules are really very simple, but are almost never followed in practice. This book served as the reference for my first really large database design project, and at its conclusion, we had the most stable, thoroughly documented, and good performing database my company had ever produced. It wasn't magic, it was just following the steps methodically, especially the emphasis on capturing business rules. It's just the best.

The Best Intro RDBMS Book,
By
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
This is the best intro RDBMS book out there. It explains everything you need to know to design a database. It isn't vendor documentation and isn't trying to be. There are some areas that would benefit from a second edition but nothing in it is patently "wrong" or "out-dated."

Great book on RDBMS,
By Milady (TH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
I purchased this book because it was a mandatory reference in database course. This contains lots of fundamental concepts of relational database. It is a well-organized book starting from LDM rules then to RDD rules with tons of practical examples. The authors does a very good job in explaining and clarifying all the essences, even a trivial point is made clear. This is a must-have for all of you who have to deal with relational database.

Great book - is prime for a second edition,
By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
This is a great book. It is detailed and well written. It offers almost total immersion in the subject. There are no "cute" editorial distractions from the subject and the authors are direct in their approach. Although the concepts presented are still sound, it would be nice to see a second edition to keep pace with the current IT environment. Great read.

Exactly what I was looking for,
By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
Even though it's 10 years old, it's a great book. The book explains everything regarding relational DB design in a step by step, thorough, and pratical manner. It reads very well and is not bogged down with theory. The sections describing logical modeling make Booch, Rumbaugh and Jacobsen (the three amigos) look like they were behind the times when they came out with their stuff regarding OOD. I can't believe this book is as old as it is.

Clear distinction between ERM and the relational Model,
By
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
This book teaches a product independant step by step approach to design a relational database. The autors clearly differentiate between data modeling (ERM) and Relational Database Design. Even if the book is older than 10 years, it is very helpful to design databases with current products like Oracle 9i, DB2 V8 etc.

This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
Database design has taken so many leaps since this book was written, but the concepts you'll find in this book are still very sound. As a beginning data modeler you would gain a lot from these pages.

By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Relational Database Design (Paperback)
First book i have read, which give "the way" how to make a relational model and then how to design a relational database, step by step. Starting from data gathering over application area (user view). Ending to design processes. Lots of examples. I liked the way the whole process is described.

Great reference book,

I teach MSAccess for business professionals who sometime need more information on relational databases. I often refer this book to my students so that they can get a clearer picture of what relational databases are all about.
