Book Description

This Handbook is an essential tool for plant managers, process engineers, environmental consultants, and site remediation specialists that focuses on practices for handling a broad range of industrial solid waste problems. In addition to equipment and process options, the author presents information on waste minimization practices that can be used in conjunction with or can provide alternatives to equipment and process investments. Environmental cost accounting measures and energy-efficient technologies are provided.

Valuable information for those concerned with meeting government regulations and with the economic considerations (such as fines for violations and cost-effective methods) is presented in a practical manner. Included in the text are sidebar discussions, questions for thinking and discussion, recommended resources for the reader (including Web sites), and a comprehensive glossary.

Two companion books by Cheremisnoff are available:
Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies, and Handbook of Air Pollution Control Technologies.

- Covers leading edge technology and standard equipment for managing industrial solid waste problems
- Valuable in meeting government regulations
- Presents in-depth analysis of the financial impact of alternative technologies available

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Review, very easy to read!, February 8, 2004
By
This review is from: Handbook of Solid Waste Management and Waste Minimization Technologies (Hardcover)
Dr. Cheremisinoff makes a good approach of waste management for everybody who is inside the bussiness at public or private level. The review for incineration technology is very complete and easy to read at the same time because he uses a friendly colloquial mode. The same applies for wastewater sludges issue (biosolids)and for volume reduction chapters. So you would mistake if you want to find here a book full of formulas or equations (for that, please look after Shun Dar Lin books). This is more like a transcription of workshops for people looking after a general scope for waste handling and management in a very precise manner. You have to know some things about waste management to find this book really interesting. But you do not have to be an specialist at all!. It helps you at the level of policies and strategies for waste management treatment and final disposal.
Ah! I almost forgot it: The chapter N°2 about the main US acts and legislation on waste (e.g. CERCLA, RCRA, etc) is a wonderful abstract to all of us non US citizens non aware of US norms. It helped me to start knowing the subject!.
So, you will need this book if you are starting an specialization or a new position on waste management. And if you are deep inside on the bussiness this is a good refresh!
So...Why did I put 4 stars instead 5? Well, everything can be improved... and I'm waiting eagerly for a new edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for the Pollution Prevention Manager, January 27, 2006
This review is from: Handbook of Solid Waste Management and Waste Minimization Technologies (Hardcover)
The works of Dr. Cheremisinoff are well known. This volume is no exception to a number of fine technical publications he has created over the years which have enriched the library of technical resources available for industry practicioners. The book provides a very thorough discussion of technologies and options available for industrial waste management with a focus on cleaner technologies and approaches to pollution prevention. In reading over sections, particularly with regard to waste to energy technologies and gasification technologies, some innovative approaches that are within the commercial realm are discussed.

I highly recommed this volume both as a primer, since it is very reader friendly and wirtten at a compehensive but straightfoward style, and for the expert who will find new ideas and concepts for addressing industry issues on waste management.
