Book Description

January 20, 2007
This Handbook offers practical suggestions for implementing and strengthening spiritual ecumenism, the heart of all efforts to re-unite divided Christians. It is grounded in the documents that have shaped the Catholic Churchs engagement in seeking Christian unity, those of the Second Vatican Council, as well as others such as the encyclical Ut Unum Sint and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A Handbook of Spiritual Ecumenism is written for anyone who values deeply the restoration of Christian unity, especially those responsible for promoting it at various levels of Church life. Cardinal Kasper extends a loving invitation to Christians of all traditions, encouraging them to join their Catholic brothers and sisters in prayer and action for unity.

An accomplished theologian and author of many books and articles, he studied at the University of Tubingen and taught at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. 5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Suggestions Based on Church Documents, February 6, 2007
This review is from: A Handbook of Spiritual Ecumenism (Paperback)
The true meaning of the word "handbook" is exemplified by this idea-packed resource, which came about through the work of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. In the introduction, Cardinal Kasper, the council's president since 2001, explains the circumstances of its creation, the source documents, and intended audience: everyone who has at heart the restoration of unity among Christians. He specifically invites Christians of all traditions to join with Catholics in the recommended prayer and spiritual activities "insofar as these are in keeping with their own practice."

The 13 chapters are divided into three categories: Christian Faith, Prayer and Worship, and Diakonia and Witness. Roughly one-third of the material is devoted to bulleted lists of practical suggestions for giving life to the principles under discussion, topics including youth, the liturgical year, and sacramental celebrations.
