The true meaning of the word "handbook" is exemplified by this idea-packed resource, which came about through the work of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. In the introduction, Cardinal Kasper, the council's president since 2001, explains the circumstances of its creation, the source documents, and intended audience: everyone who has at heart the restoration of unity among Christians. He specifically invites Christians of all traditions to join with Catholics in the recommended prayer and spiritual activities "insofar as these are in keeping with their own practice."The 13 chapters are divided into three categories: Christian Faith, Prayer and Worship, and Diakonia and Witness. Roughly one-third of the material is devoted to bulleted lists of practical suggestions for giving life to the principles under discussion, topics including youth, the liturgical year, and sacramental celebrations. |
