Editorial Reviews

Review

"I love the accessibility, brevity of entries, and layout of this book. Many of my students keep the text long after the course is over to have a handy and accurate reference on the shelf at work."
--Nancy Schneider, University of Maine - Augusta

"I have found this book to be an excellent resource for finding answers to a variety of technical writing questions both simply and quickly. The wide range of topics covered also makes the handbook useful as a general reference across many disciplines."
--Cynthia Raisor, Texas A&M University

"This handbook has kept up with the increasing focus on technology and electronic research and with the typical components of a variety of professional documents. Once students discover this book's usefulness, they consult it in conjunction with every writing assignment, saving me time and encouraging them to participate more fully in their own learning."
--Karen Welch, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire

"I choose the Handbook of Technical Writing because I want students to have a single, reliable, versatile and broad-ranging text that will serve them well in a variety of circumstances."
--Ralph Batie, Oregon Institute of Technology

"The Handbook of Technical Writing is written clearly and the information in it is accessible. It's a valuable companion in any technical writing classroom."
--Natalie D. Segal, University of Hartford

Most of the entries in Handbook of Technical Writing, Ninth Edition are geared toward business and technical writers, but I believe the advice would be helpful to anyone who writes.

WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT?
----------------------------
I used to work as a translator of technical, business, and legal documents (Japanese into English), and I found this to be an invaluable reference work (back when it was the sixth edition). As a graduate student writing academic papers, I have upgraded to this one. In fact, sometimes I just flip through it for fun and read different sections because they are interesting. I always get something out of it. The writing is clear and concise. The examples look like they are drawn from real life. The entries are arranged alphabetically, and if you cannot find what you are looking for, you can use the index. The book itself is a model of how to write.

IS THE NEW EDITION BETTER?
----------------------------
The content has changed over time since I first used the sixth edition. Sometimes entries have disappeared altogether, some are new, and the ones that remain have often been reworded. This is great! They didn't just keep churning out new editions with minor changes, but they actually combed through it and worked to improve it.

I highly recommend this!

FREEBIES
----------------------------
Also, don't forget about the internet resources they have made available to go along with the book. If you create an account with them as a student or instructor (takes less than a minute) you get even more content. There are helpful links, model documents, and so forth available for free.

I have many writing handbooks (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style). This book is by far the best. It has a lot of very useful information, and the information is easy to find. For technical writing, it is the best I have seen. It may be a little too technical for creative writers or journalists.

I largely appreciate the layout of this handbook - everything is alphabetized for quick reference! Provides excellent examples of format and design. This is one of the few college textbooks I actually intend to keep!

This book is great for all-things-technical-communication. It has everything from interviews, to posters, to resumes, to groupwork, to citation formats, memos, and more. And then a whole lot more after that.

I think this book is great and a must have. However, I only rated it four stars because, on pages 627 and 628, almost all the page numbers are incorrect for the Commonly Misused Words and Phrases. Considering the nature of this book, I was quite shocked. I didn't check the rest of the page numbers. That being said, this book has a lot of great information, it's easy to use, and it's written so that anyone can understand it. I would recommend this book to students, teachers, and technical writers.

I have learned so much from reading the first few pages. There are tons of things I have forgotten and this book brings all of the memories of writting back. It is in alphabetical order and references things like different types of writting material, grammer, punctuation, accronyms and many other items one would question about writting.

This text is packed with great information for writing. I thought I was a good writer - until I bought this for a professional writing class. Contains several lists of easy to make mistakes. I'm going to keep this text, there's so much helpful information! The organization of the book is a little different, though.

An excellent reference book for any tech comm publisher. The book is organized in a way that it'll be easy to use for reference but not as a cover-to-cover read (well, tech comm publications are boring to begin with), it's a must have for any TComm department.
