Book Description

1584886021 978-1584886020 March 24, 2006 1
Many statistics texts tend to focus more on the theory and mathematics underlying statistical tests than on their applications and interpretation. This can leave readers with little understanding of how to apply statistical tests or how to interpret their findings. While the SPSS statistical software has done much to alleviate the frustrations of social science professionals and students who must analyze data, they still face daunting challenges in selecting the proper tests, executing the tests, and interpreting the test results.

With emphasis firmly on such practical matters, this handbook sets forth clear guidelines for performing specific statistical tests with SPSS and interpreting the output. The author clearly explains the purpose of each test and the research designs for which they are relevant, demonstrates the execution of the tests, and explains how to interpret the results obtained. The presentation covers not only the point-and-click Windowsä method of using SPSS, but also the syntax method, which provides users with the power and flexibility to deal with complex experimental designs. All chapters include the full SPSS output of the test being addressed and the step-by-step interpretation of the results. All of the data sets used in the examples along with the SPSS code are freely available for download at www.crcpress.com.

Armed with the knowledge, tools, and experience this handbook provides, social scientists, both student and professional, can maximize the utility of SPSS, choose the right statistical tests with confidence, and more accurately and appropriately interpret their results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Had This When I Started My Dissertation, July 24, 2008

I will definitely keep this book handy as I begin doing my own research. It is now my "desert island" stats book. I saw some of the content on Google books and suspected it would be helpful, and it was. (You can look it up for yourself to see if it's what you need, which is the beauty of that system.)

If you have had graduate statistics courses, this book will make it all clear to you. If you have not had them, you will likely still find it quite useful for research. It is aimed at researchers at or beyond the grad level.

Dr. Ho's approach is exceedingly practical (it is definitely a handbook) and social-science focused. He begins with "easy" operations and with each chapter progresses to more complex ones, in a very logical fashion.

Each chapter also progresses in a logical way: he includes a research question, an example of a study asking that type of question, what statistical operation to use for that question, and then shows the reader click-by-click how to use SPSS to answer that question.

He also shows what part of the output to take as your answer, what it means, and (by example) shows how to report it in your text, which is probably my favorite aspect of this book.

The test selection grid on page 9 may be useful if you are not sure what statistical test to use for your data. Another useful aspect is that Dr. Ho clearly shows what requirements and assumptions should be observed before using a specific test.

There is no need to read the entire book to get to the part you need to do, unless you want to. You can open, say, the chapter on Factorial Analysis of Variance and start analyzing right there.

Even though this text was not yet published when I began my dissertation, I'm glad that I ended up getting it during my revision process. It helped me with a number of questions that my stats professors and committee members sort of danced around or gave me only theoretical answers for.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dr. Ho!
