The Second Edition of this popular formulary provides up-to-date, easily accessible information about drugs for all types of veterinary practices. From companion dogs, cats, exotics, reptiles, birds, and fish to horses, cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs, this handbook provides all the information needed in daily practice. Portable, concise, and easy to use, Handbook of Veterinary Drugs, Second Edition will be a staple in every veterinary practice. The book is divided along the lines of practice: small animal (dogs and cats), large animal (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs), and exotics (avian, rabbits, ferrets, reptiles, fish, and "pocket pets"). Each section begins with tables of dosages, followed by detailed descriptions of commonly prescribed medications. Each entry includes the drug name (along with US and Canadian trade names), followed by sections on: indications, adverse and common side effects, drug interactions, formulations, and other uses. Conversion tables and formulas are easy to locate and use. The index allows readers to look up either the generic or brand name for rapid access to the relevant information. Included in the adverse effects section are long-term human exposure considerations, as required by US regulatory offices. Lecturers - Click here to order a FREE Review Copy of this title

Here is the essential—and efficient—drug reference for today's veterinarian. This thoroughly updated third editing of the popular formulary provides current drugs and veterinary practices in a practical format that's concise, portable, and easy to use. You'll have immediate access to a compendium of essential drug information on therapies for a full range of large, small, and exotic animals. With its breadth of content and efficient format, it's the ideal text for veterinary students and a valuable clinical tool for practice and rotations.

Highlights and Features:

  • For ease of use, the book is divided into Small Animals (dogs and cats), Large Animals (horses, ruminant species, and pigs), and Exotic Species (avian species, ferrets, reptiles, rodents, and rabbits).
  • Each part includes a table of drugs and dosages and an alphabetically organized description of commonly prescribed medications. Part III, Exotics, is further subdivided according to animal type: rodents and rabbits, ferrets, reptiles, and birds.
  • Each entry includes the generic drug name (and U.S. and Canadian trade names, as appropriate), indications, routes of administration, adverse and common side effects (including long-term human exposure considerations, as required by U.S. regulations), drug interactions, source of supply, formulations, and additional drug uses.
  • Small Animals, Part I, now includes information on analgesics for acute and chronic pain in dogs and cats, plus chemotherapy protocols.
  • Practical tables cover antimicrobial agents, antiparasitics, and anthelmintics used in treating various species.
  • Easy-scan index speeds readers from generic or brand drug name to complete entries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Drug Guide, November 21, 2000
This review is from: Handbook of Veterinary Drugs (Paperback)
This book contains three sections; small animals, large animals and exotics, with each section being split into drug dosages, antimicrobials/anthelmintics and descriptions of drugs.

Each sub-section is alphabetically ordered making it quick and easy to find whatever drug you are looking for, and there is a comprehensive index in the back containing both generic and trade names as well as some diseases and therapies! The down side of this is that the trade names relate to Canada and USA so some of the British drugs aren't listed by trade name. I haven't found this to be too much of a problem, but sometimes it is difficult to find drugs if you only know the trade name.

I found the drug dosages sections very useful as not only does it give the dose but also it gives the different doses for different indications and administration routes. I especially liked the exotics section since it gives you detailed information on rodents, rabbits, ferrets, reptiles and birds; subjects on which data is usually difficult to come by.

The size of the book makes it very handy to keep in your bag for reference during lectures and it is small enough to fit in your pocket when on clinics.

This book provides the usefulness of a formulary and the convenience of dosage charts, all combined into one pocket-sized handbook. It has been a great aid to my studies and I highly recommend it to vet students on either side of the Atlantic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent veterinary companion book, May 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Handbook of Veterinary Drugs (Paperback)
This drug book is organized extremely well for easy use. You can obtain dosaging information quicker than other veterinary drug books with a convenient formulary in the front of each section. It is nice that the doses are separated for large animal vs small animal. The only drawback of this book lies in the drug descriptions in that they are not complete. The specific drug descriptions will provide a general idea of the drug's uses and major side effects and available sizes, but not some of the more comprehensive information that is sometimes necessary.
