I bought this for my sister - but after looking at it before wrapping it, I realized I want one for myself - if they're still available. The only trouble is it's not finished, so there's little work involved - but what a deal compared to the shadow boxes that are finished. This is prettier than most and so much less money!

the shadow box is really, really nice. i'm not staining it because the natural wood goes well with my antique furniture that is dark. i have an elephant collection and put most of them in the box.
i will most likely buy another one for the rest of my collections, i'm a Beatle fanatic and will probably get the shadow box for all my little things of the beatles. again, very satisfied with the shadow box. laclose

I had trouble finding a shadow box that my daughter would like. This one is well-made and unfinished, so she could pick the color of stain. It is perfect!

The item was as pictured and as stated. It probably would have been great if I had decided to paint it instead of trying to stain it. However, I bought this for my husband who prefers a stained finish. The wood grain look appeals to him. So I happily bought it. I have stained other projects before, cabinet doors, step stools, chairs, etc. Also note that this box is made of very very soft and open grained wood. Normally not a problem except... I sanded it down with a fine grit sand paper, the first step for any good finish. One wants to remove any traces of oil or glue so that the stain can take evenly. This entire box is pretty much entirely held together with glue. My major problem arose when trying to sand the glue down so that I could stain it. The wood is very soft, the glue is very hard. You see my problem? I began to wear the surrounding wood down much more quickly than the glue. After a couple of hours of work I then saw no visible traces of wood glue and attempted to stain it. Immediately I realized that I am an idiot and missed a lot of the glue in the joints, which are unsurprisingly very hard to get to. The result was horrid. I wound up enameling it instead, which had a better result. Not what my husband wanted though. Next time I'm going to just suck it up and make my own, I would probably take about the same amount of time. |
