Nearly perfect premier recording,
By Angel (Sacramento,CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handel - Faramondo / Baird · Minter · Fortunato · Lane · Callahan · Castaldi · Brewer CO · Palmer (Audio CD)
Nearly perfect premier recording of a great Handel Opera. The music, without a doubt,is fantastic, try Clotilde's Act II Aria"Combattuta da due venti"with it's sweeping String writing, like a storm(CD II;track 9),or the Act III Duet for Clotilde and Adolfo"Cara!/Caro!"(CD III;track 5).But the singers, although they give a good performance here, are vocally imperfect.Julianne Baird is much too whispery, and Mary Ellen Callahan's voice too whiney. The other singers are rather gruff at times. But despite this it's still a great recording, with a lot to offer. This recording, with the excellent Brewer chamber Orchestra, led by Rudolf Palmer,Lives up to their previous Imeneo recording.

His time has finally come,

For nearly 200 years the operas of Handel fell into general oblivion and neglect, but today there are many recordings of these masterpieces. Handel was one of the greatest dramatic composers for the voice in the history of music, and it definately shows in his operas and oratorios. The music in Faramondo is first rate, and this recording sparkles with all the qualities that make this piece great. The insertion of the Concerto Grosso in A minor I think adds to the feeling and momentum of the opera. There are many great arias, too many to list that have beautiful gorgeous melodies, great duets, and the instrumental sinfonias are gems too. Pick this recording up, this opera has suffered neglect long enough. Long live Faramondo, LONG LIVE HANDEL!

AGRADABLE DESCUBRIMIENTO.,

This review is from: Handel - Faramondo / Baird · Minter · Fortunato · Lane · Callahan · Castaldi · Brewer CO · Palmer (Audio CD)
