Another side of Handel,
By Simerial "Sim" (Montreal, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handel: Funeral Anthem/Te Deum in D Major (Audio CD)
The choir (not too big) performance is strong and the orchestra has a superb sound. The Te Deum is "what you can expect from Handel", but the heart of the CD is the "almost intimist" (for Handel) suite of funeral anthems. Forget the over-executed Messiah. Here's a piece where Handel will let you hear another side of his work : tenderness, delicacy and a subtil restrain... A wonderful discovery a little bit in line with the Ode fot the Birthday of Queen Anne (but with a lot less solo parts).
