Handel is my favorite classical composer. He had a wonderful knack for melody and interesting counterpoint. This was the first Handel CD I bought, and it was a great place to start. I was not sure that I would like baroque music at the time, but this CD convinced me otherwise. There are some wonderful, fast orchestral pieces (such as the "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba"), which are balanced by slower selections (such as the exerpt from "Xerxes" and "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Come"). "Eternal Source of Light Divine" is an extremely beautiful vocal piece. My only problem with this CD is that it made me want to buy other CD's of Handel's work which overlapped with some of the material on this collection. For example, this CD has exerpts from Handel's famous "Music for the Royal Fireworks" and "Water Music." In order to experience these works in their whole forms, I had to buy a CD that overlapped with the material on this one. However, this is an excellent Handel primer. It is the perfect collection to introduce a listener to one of the best and most accessible of the baroque composers.

Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic
Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!

I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.

As of 24 July 2012, I've listened to all the samples available from Amazon for any CD that matches "Handel Water Music" and I find there are three that seem to cover a range of Handel Music:

- Best Of
- Greatest Hits
- Handel collection

There may be more collections available on Amazon that I have not heard, since I was specifically looking for the Baroque piece from the Water Music, but nevertheless here are my findings, that may inform your purchase decision:

All three CDs are to my ear, excellent as far as audio quality and musicianship. While there are exceptions, I find that generally is the case with both classical and country albums. Perhaps there is more attention paid to these niche markets. Yes, millions of people listen to country, but the demand doesn't compare to Wamart's sales of Lady Gaga cookie-cutter songs. It's a shame, `cuz my 1st love is rock and 2nd love is roll.

In my view, "The Best of" is in fact, the best of the three Handel albums cited, offering both a variety of selections and artists, as well as a variety of instrumentation, all of which seem to strike the right balance between the technical reproduction (true to the literal composition) and musical interpretation (what I expect Handel was trying to evoke emotionally in the listener). For me, the highlight on the "Best of" is Track 7. Solomon, HWV 67: Solomon, HWV 67, Act III: Sinfonia, "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba," played with more assertiveness and playfulness on this album than on "The Handel Collection," and apparently (and surprisingly) absent from "The Greatest Hits" CD, though clearly recognizable as a "hit" to anyone with the slightest exposure to classical music.

Another favorite on "The Best Of" CD is Track 20. Water Music: Suite No.

Absolutely fabulous. This is my second time to purchase this CD. Absolutely love it. I played the first copy so many times that it started having some problems, so I purchased a second copy and am once again enjoying this thrilling music.
