Beautiful keyboard suites by Handel,
By
This review is from: Handel: The Eight Harpsichord Suites; Six Fugues or Voluntarys; Fugue in E; Fugue in F (Audio CD)
I have in my collection a CD by the Australian ensemble 'Capella Corelli' (on the CD label MOVE, catalogue MD3126) which incudes a beatiful performance of one of the Handel keyboard suites. The harpsichordist is John O'Donnell, and both the music and the playing are wonderful. I also have the Keith Jarrett performance of the keyboard suites on modern piano, which is also a delightful performance. Paul Nicholson's performances on this 2-CD set are on harpsichord, and the sound is clear and enjoyable. The tone quality of the harpsichord is of course quite different to that of the modern piano. But I find that both instruments allow the grace and elegance of the Handel suites to shine through easily. I have listed to the Nicholson performances many times, and always enjoy them. If you don't know the Handel suites, then I would recommend this CD as a way of meeting some beautiful music. If you know and like the Keith Jarret recordings, then you'll almost certainly find the harpsichord renditions refreshing and different. Recommended.

Excellent rendition of the Handel Harpsichord Suites,
By Willie C. Burnside Jr. (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handel: The Eight Harpsichord Suites; Six Fugues or Voluntarys; Fugue in E; Fugue in F (Audio CD)
I thought that this CD was excellent. At first, it took me a while to get used to the sound of solo harpsichord, but after a while I thought it was a delight. Prior to this CD, I had only heard the harpsichord used in orchestral pieces. I think that Paul Nicholson's technique was excellent. He executes the trills flawlessly. The sound quality is very good. I advise people to buy this CD if they truly are fond of Baroque music.
