This review is from: Handel: Messiah (Highlights) (Audio CD)
On the scale of Handel "Messiah" performances on CD, this one is definitely in the Historically Informed camp (as opposed to those bloated Sargent and Beecham recordings). But it sounds fresh and alive, far from the cautious museum quality of many original instrument outings. A key factor is Nicolas McGegan, an early music specialist who is right at home with his regular ensemble, the Philharmonia Baroque. Conductor and orchestra are in sync throughout, whether it's the tender, reflective moments or those striding Handel choruses. Soloists and chorus are first-rate, led by the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, whose solos only remind us of the depth of our loss. Sound is open and transparent, allowing all of Handel's variety to shine. Highly recommended at the top of the available HIP "Messiahs" on disc.
