Biography

Rivaled only by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Neville Marriner was one of the most important of the early figures who spearheaded the reawakening of modern interest in Baroque and early Classical music. In the 1950s, he founded Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the first British early music ensemble to find a large international audience. Marriner has since become one of the most popular conductors ... Read more in Amazon's Sir Neville Marriner Store

Product Description

Sir Neville Marriner thins out the usual ASMF textures and leads vigorous, stately accounts of both the Water Music Suites and the Music for the Royal Fireworks. The playing is snappy, the feeling of dance-inspired animation just right. This is the ideal compilation, presenting both scores complete; and the sound is open, well balanced, and extremely well defined. --Ted Libbey

So, if you are looking for a great recording of Handel's Water Music, I highly recommend this one.

Aside from scholarship, the playing and the sound is beautiful and equally balanced.

There are countless versions of Handel's Royal Fireworks/Water Music available. This recording unlike many others uses modern instruments which tend to give a fuller sound, particularly with the string section. Marriner is one of my favourite conductors and a great exponent of Handel's music and this disc I am lead to believe is probably the best available using modern instruments. If you prefer the more historically accurate period instrument versions I would recommend recordings by Gardiner or Pinnock

Georg Friedrich Handel's most famous instrumental works are presented here: his Music for the Royal Fireworks and his three suites of Water Music in F major, D major, and G major. A grand occasion celebrating a treaty is the backdrop for Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks. Grand stories surrounding the event exist, including a great traffic jam on the London Bridge, a 101 canon salute, and a fire which led to a swordfight. There were 100 musicians outside to play music including 12 trumpets and 16 french horns, and Handel was far from happy with the situation. In any case, the music is very stately, featuring trumpets, horns, and oboes in many guises, not to mention plenty of fanfares.

Handel's Water Music Suites were composed for the King's Wednesday evening excursions on the water. A separate barge was allocated to the musicians. Some 50 musicians played entertainment, an event to bring Venice to England. Some of Handel's greatest melodies situate themselves into these three suites. Very courtly and often rooted in dance, these works represent Handel at the top of his game. Each suite is scored slightly differently: F major has oboes, bassoons, horns, and strings, while the D major adds trumpets, and the G major includes recorders and flutes; all have the standard basso continuo, well played on this recording.

The chamber ensemble Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields has the right touch in all of these works, but as opposed to many performances, a general courtliness (one might go so far as to say stuffiness) is present in these pieces, giving a dignified grandeur, as opposed to the freneticism of other recordings.

Without a doubt this piece could be described, along with Vivaldi's Four Seasons, as the "Stairway to Heaven" of Baroque era classical music. It is a shame Handel's most well-known composition has been played to death because it is really a joyous and fascinating piece. In this vibrant version from 1971, the Academy under the direction of Neville Marriner play the Music for the Royal Fireworks with the fire and spirit it deserves, and then treat the Water Music with exceptional delicacy and refinement. This is an exquisite recording that any fan of Sir Neville Marriner, Handel, or classical music in general should hear.

When looking for a CD set to replace my worn-out tapes of Handel's Water Music, I spent quite a while searching.

And just like Goldilocks, I just kept striking out, this recording is too fast, this recording is too slow, this recording sounds to grainy, do you really expect me to believe that's a trumpet your playing..... then I heard this recording.

It is just right.

The balance between the horns and everything else, the tempo, everything was perfect.

So, if you are looking for a great recording of Handel's Water Music, I highly recommend this one.

I own this album in three formats. I love the bright brasses and the fine performances. I find it far more satisfying than the "random artist" fifty-for-a-dollar collections. Vinyl may sound best, but it is hard to beat the convenience of an MP3!

But I would still love to find the HI-FI recordings from the 50's that I first listened to as a child out of a single 18-inch Paul Klipsch folded horn and ducted port speaker placed in the corner of the living room. This recording comes close to that 1956 sound, but at the height of multi-channel analog recording technology in 1986, and without any clicks or pops.

(There was a quality of that single huge microphone of the middle 1950's artfully placed to pick up the whole orchestra, with the orchestra seated just for the benefit of the microphone, nor for a stage, that makes pre-stereo classical recordings such wonderful art. No digital remastering, no "mix-down", no pitch correction, no "sweetening", just get it right, get it now.)

These may have been the first performances of Handel's Water and Royal Fireworks Music that I ever heard. Certainly they are the first recordings of same that I ever owned, all on vinyl some 40+ years ago. And while in the meantime I have moved to the point where I prefer original instrument renditions of Baroque orchestral works, these performances directed by Neville Marriner remain my all-time favorites when it comes to modern instrument versions. Indeed, they are in my group of all-time favorites, period. The Water Music suites flow as easily as, well, H2O, with a lithe, supple quality unmatched elsewhere. The Royal Fireworks Music is still suave rather than rough and rambunctious, but the stirring backbone is always evident. These are simply marvelous recordings, regardless of performance style, and I will never give up this disc.
