This review is from: Handel - Semele, Opera-Oratorio (1744) / Diaz, Armstrong, Watts, Tear, Palmer, ECO, Somary (Audio CD)
This budget version (originally issued in 1973) of Handel's great opera/oratorio has a lot going for it. The chorus is always good and sometimes superb; the basses--Justino Diaz as Cadmus/Somnus and Neilson Taylor as the Priest--are both excellent; Robert Tear has a large, beautiful tenor voice, perfect for the role of Jupiter; Helen Watts is a marvel as Ino/Juno, her voice changing so that you can actually hear the difference in the two women she sings...and sings beautifully. I'd love to give this 5 stars, but unfortunately, the title role is not sung well...at least, not to my ears. Sheila Armstrong was very popular in Great Britain at the time, so maybe it's just me, but her voice sounds very shrill and weak for the part. At first it didn't bother me, but by the end of the recording it did. Nonetheless, for the price, the recording is a good deal.
