Another interesting coupling from Robert King. First we had Handel's Fireworks Music and the Coronation Anthems giving us the ultimate in Baroque splendor. Now we have two different composers' brands of "water music." Handel and Telemann were good friends (Handel sent Telemann specimens of rare plants for his greenhouse--how's that for piece of trivia?), and both men wrote music to order--Telemann much more so than Handel. In fact, there's very little instrumental music by Handel--he preferred operas and oratorios--but there's tons of it by Telemann. He was the most prolific composer that we care about now. Handel's Water Music shows him at his best, but with Telemann you've got to pick and choose. Fortunately, his piece is also delightful, and both are very well played. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performances and sound. August 4, 2003
This CD is beautifully recorded and is among the top performance recommendations for Handel's ever-popular Water Music. But the great bonus here is Telemann's delightful opus. I have heard an alternative version of Telemann's Water Music, but this present version is way out in front.
If you are looking for a very fine version of the Handel, you can do no better than to get this CD which has such a terrific coupling.
Full marks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishingly musical, even with period instruments October 27, 2005
I suppose to those who follow Robert King's enormous recorded output, his musicality is no surprise. However, I don't collect Baroque music, and I flee from the sound of period instruments with their buzzes, clacks, zings, and honks.

Curiosity drew me to this recording of Handel's Water Music, a work I never thought I would listen to again, thanks to a surfeit in high school. I soon discovered what I was missing. King's conducting rises high above Gardiner, Parrott, Pinnock, Norrington, and Mackerras--to mention just a few of the HIP stars, in terms of sheer musicality. Everything is phrased beautifully, as if this sublime music isn't a warhorse but a richly expressive masterpiece. I've never heard period instruments sound so sweet, either. All in all, a delightful recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Powerful Recording January 10, 2003
Verified Purchase
My wife and I are in amazement over this recording. Having just seen King lead the Detroit Symphony we wished to have some of his recordings in our collection.
This one knocks us out everytime it's played. The energy and force which King leads and the Consort plays is truly magnficent! One can just see King into the music, contorting his body this way and that with the notes, passionately urging and leading the musicians on and on.
We have many other recordings of the Handel Water Music, but were first exposed to Telemann's at the King led DSO performance, and it is becoming our favorite.
This is a true sleeper of a magnificent, passionately played rendering of baroque water music at its finest!
