5.0 out of 5 stars a great book, April 24, 2009

This review is from: Handguns of the World: Military Revolvers and self-loaders from 1870 to 1945. (Hardcover)
This is a great book on handguns. It is one of the top ten handgun books any one who has a genuine interest in handguns should own. There are clear cut explanations and disgrams showing how all the basic revolver actions operate. Almost every known semi-automatic pistol action is described in clear cut detail. History is also provided throughout. You will really like this book. In short, one of the top ten.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the period covered., December 11, 2011
This review is from: Handguns of the World: Military Revolvers and self-loaders from 1870 to 1945. (Hardcover)
This is perhaps the best book on pistols in general, and military pistols in particular. Rather than take specific pistols (ie, contract guns, unique variations of a common gun), the author chooses to follow the lineage of a certain design, or to follow a certain nation's guns. Thus, Browning pistols have their own chapter, and so on. Don't expect this book to be a catalog of pistols that you can flip through, rather a family tree, or regional classification system. My only complaint is that despite being published pretty recently, the book picks a fairly old date to stop. This leaves out a number of newer designs (Glock, Desert Eagle), as well as modern trends in development (concealment pistols, large caliber automatics). For the pricepoint, its unbeatable.
