About the Author

Susan Guagliumi has restored the interiors and gardens of two early 19th-century homes, and her gardening projects are a compilation of 10 years of research, exploration, experimentation, and creativity. She is also the author of several machine- and hand-knitting books and has led craft workshops in the United States and abroad. She lives in Northford, Connecticut.

More About the Author

I am a machine knitter, hand knitter and an enthusiastic gardener - which I hope is reflected in the books I have written. My web site (www.guagliumi.com) is focused mostly on machine knitting, but I also blog about gardening at www.guagliumi.com/blog. The gardening makes it a constant challenge to keep my hands and nails clean enough to demonstrate machine knitting as I teach throughout the US and abroad. There is a calendar on my web site where I list both knitting and gardening events, teaching and appearances so maybe I'll see you one of these days!

Handmade for the Garden by Susan Guagliumi is in itself a necessary garden tool. It offers the scope of a workshop or a class with precise and comprehensive directions for many of the items needed in a garden as well as options and variations within the individual projects. With this book I will finally build a willow trellis to fit an odd space near my deck, and clear up my confusion regarding differences in cement and mortar for hypertufa as well as exterior mosaics. The book takes the reader through a year of seasons with wonderful and (for me) much needed organization, such as getting plant supports in place for your climbers while your seedlings are hardening off in easily constructed coldframes.
All is offered in great detail for creating solidly structured projects that are in harmony with ecology and nature. That this book is so generous with ideas IS its source of inspiration; its bounty is a prelude to the gardener's anticipated harvest. Many of the projects are so artful that non gardeners will find ways to make additions to their yards and homes. And have a lot of fun doing!
For pre-season and after-season projects, storage and planning, you will want to keep this book in your gardener's toolbox.

On this first day of spring, I was thrilled to find my pre-ordered Handmade for the Garden waiting for me on my porch. There are over 200 pages of fabulous ideas for my garden, from potting, to mosaics, all the way to off-season projects. I cannot wait for my snow to melt so I can get gardening!

My copy of Handmade for the Garden arrived yesterday and I have not been able to put it down. I already have three projects lined up that I can get started on even though there's still snow on the ground here in northwestern Connecticut. The project I'm most excited about is the willow switch fencing in page 156. The book is so beautifully shot, and the instructions for things I never would have thought to try are easy to follow and beautifully illustrated. Guagliumi's whole approach makes me want to up my game in the garden. She needs her own TV show!

I received my copy of Handmade for the Garden on Monday & have found it difficult to put down. The photography is beautiful, the instructions for the very creative, unique projects are clearly written even for the inexperienced DIYer. Best of all, they can be made inexpensively without the use of tools most of us don't own...can't wait to make some.

Want the perfect gift for the novice to experienced gardener? This is it!!! Even though Susan lives in the East Coast, her ideas, tips and step by step instructions apply to gardening throughout the country. I love how she pairs plants with pots, like pairing wine with meals. I've been following her and her blog for years - this book is stellar!!
