Good blade, but the rest needs some work,

Just got my Musashi katana today. Another reviewer on Amazon said he thought the blade on his sword was excellent fot the money, but that the rest of the sword needed a lot of work. I agree. While the blade wasn't terribly sharp out of the box, a little work with my ceramic hones brought the edge up to my standards. Still not as sharp as a good pocket knife, but okay for a sword. The blade also held its edge decently when I started cutting. For the money, this is by far the best blade I have seen, and I just ordered another sword so I could have another one of these wonderful blades at a great price.
The handle needs some work, though. Actually, I think most of it just needs to be replaced. The synthetic ray-skin is a little off-putting, but the real problem is with its fit. After chopping through a few small green branches (about 1/2 inch diameter) out in the yard, and striking a chunk of cedar a few times, the handle is getting quite loose. This is a pretty abusive way to treat a sword and I don't recommend this treatment for yours, but I wanted to torture it a little and see how it held up. I should have used tatami mats, but didn't have any. The blade did great, but as I said it now pops back and forth within the handle. In combat, when striking hard surfaces or parrying, this handle could not be trusted. I will replace mine, although I'll probably re-use most of the hardware. I expect I'll then have the combat equivalent of a $150-$200 katana. The blade is that good, IMHO. No complaints about the sheath. If you want a hall-hanger or a costume piece, this one will do nicely for the money. But, you could spend less and have a nicer-looking sword. There are a few cosmetic blemishes here and there. Also, as this is carbon steel, there is the distinct possibility of rust. I'd be happier with a stainless sword for costume use. Stainless swords are often lighter and easier to carry, anyway. This sword is perfect if you need a practical, functional sword on a budget and don't mind having to do some work on it. It is also perfect if you want a wall-hanger or costume sword that could be used to fight in a pinch. To be completely fair, even though I don't think stainless should be used for sword blades, one of my SCA friends says he used his stainless katana to clear brush a few years ago and it held up great. Apparently, some of the stainless blades can also be used to fight in a pinch. So, take your pick.

This review is from: Handmade Practical Musashi Samurai Katana Sword Sharp (Misc.)
I love my sword! This is probably the best Full Tang (Battle Ready) Katana you can buy in this price range. I really like mine and it was delivered quickly. Musashi makes the best practical swords by far. Keep them coming! :)

this is the first katana or "real sword" I have ever baught and the first I ever purchased online. it is beautiful, the heft is perfect and is a delight to the hands and eyes. delivery was very fast and I received it in only 4 days. I researched online before my purchase, and learned what I could about katanas and as I looked through amazon found this beauty at an amazing price as new. my only complaint is as I first extended it out in front of me I noticed the blade curve ever so slightly to the right. not a big problem for a novice such as myself but a defect never the less. all in all though I love it and I have no regrets about my purchase.
