Good blade, but the rest needs some work,

Just got my Musashi katana today. Another reviewer on Amazon said he thought the blade on his sword was excellent fot the money, but that the rest of the sword needed a lot of work. I agree. While the blade wasn't terribly sharp out of the box, a little work with my ceramic hones brought the edge up to my standards. Still not as sharp as a good pocket knife, but okay for a sword. The blade also held its edge decently when I started cutting. For the money, this is by far the best blade I have seen, and I just ordered another sword so I could have another one of these wonderful blades at a great price.
The handle needs some work, though. Actually, I think most of it just needs to be replaced. The synthetic ray-skin is a little off-putting, but the real problem is with its fit. After chopping through a few small green branches (about 1/2 inch diameter) out in the yard, and striking a chunk of cedar a few times, the handle is getting quite loose. This is a pretty abusive way to treat a sword and I don't recommend this treatment for yours, but I wanted to torture it a little and see how it held up. I should have used tatami mats, but didn't have any. The blade did great, but as I said it now pops back and forth within the handle. In combat, when striking hard surfaces or parrying, this handle could not be trusted. I will replace mine, although I'll probably re-use most of the hardware. I expect I'll then have the combat equivalent of a $150-$200 katana. The blade is that good, IMHO. No complaints about the sheath. If you want a hall-hanger or a costume piece, this one will do nicely for the money. But, you could spend less and have a nicer-looking sword. There are a few cosmetic blemishes here and there. Also, as this is carbon steel, there is the distinct possibility of rust. I'd be happier with a stainless sword for costume use. Stainless swords are often lighter and easier to carry, anyway. This sword is perfect if you need a practical, functional sword on a budget and don't mind having to do some work on it. It is also perfect if you want a wall-hanger or costume sword that could be used to fight in a pinch. To be completely fair, even though I don't think stainless should be used for sword blades, one of my SCA friends says he used his stainless katana to clear brush a few years ago and it held up great. Apparently, some of the stainless blades can also be used to fight in a pinch. So, take your pick.

This review is from: Handmade Practical Musashi Samurai Katana Sword Sharp (Misc.)
I love my sword! This is probably the best Full Tang (Battle Ready) Katana you can buy in this price range. I really like mine and it was delivered quickly. Musashi makes the best practical swords by far. Keep them coming! :)

this is the first katana or "real sword" I have ever baught and the first I ever purchased online. it is beautiful, the heft is perfect and is a delight to the hands and eyes. delivery was very fast and I received it in only 4 days. I researched online before my purchase, and learned what I could about katanas and as I looked through amazon found this beauty at an amazing price as new. my only complaint is as I first extended it out in front of me I noticed the blade curve ever so slightly to the right. not a big problem for a novice such as myself but a defect never the less. all in all though I love it and I have no regrets about my purchase.

Awesome Tang Katana,
This review is from: Handmade Practical Musashi Samurai Katana Sword Sharp (Misc.)
Alright first of all this is my first tang katana an i would hafta say im impressed with it. Shipping didnt take long at all. Warning to all who would buy this katana it is very very freaking sharp! If u was planning to go to war with someone wif juz a sword this one would prolly win for it's quality as being priced 44 bucks. Now the katana was very tight it's wasnt loose at all when i got it the tsuba an tsuka wasnt loose nor still isnt loose. Only complaint was that there was alil wood debrire on the blade when i removed it from the saya an some excess oil onto the blade but u can wipe it off wif some cotton or a reg cotton t-shirt w/o taking too much of the oil off. It comes wif a sword bag (black) was very nice. To those who would consider buying this blade i hope this review helps. Also it has the musashi emblem on the habaki which is pretty koo also.

Good sword, great price,

This sword is awesome for the price but since it's so inexpensive they can't make it as good as it could be. The one I received was overall very nice, good tight wrapping on the tsuka(handle), blade was sharp, no blade wobble. But one thing I did notice was that when I moved the cotton ito wrapping on the tsuka I noticed that the imitation ray skin doesn't wrap all the way around the wood, I'm not really sure why they don't have it wrap all around, it can't save too much excluding those two extra 1x12 in. strips of plastic, but it doesn't bother me to much because you can only notice if you slide the ito around. Upon receiving the sword I decided to take it out back and test it out on some flowers and some kind of bamboo-like weed that grows around my house and it cut through them all with ease until I accidentally hit a rusted metal planter that was hidden by the plants which put a nasty ding in the blade and bent it sideways a bit. I even went after some 3 in. wide branches which it chopped just fine after a couple whacks(easily cut half-way into the branch with one swing). Overall it's a good sword and I would recommend it to anyone and would definitely buy a second one if my current one wears out
Sorry if my review seemed long but I hope it helps you make your decision.

I read the other reviews for this weapon and was a little tentitive to purchase it. When it came however i was pleasently suprised. This product is exelent! There is no wobble in mine and nothing wrong with the saya, or suba. Best sword i own as of yet. I feel prepaired for the zombocalypse.

I got this for my brother a while back, and he is delighted with it. The blade was straight and without defects out of the box, something you seriously have to consider when buying blind. It is sharp enough to cut light targets, which is the only thing you should be cutting with this caliber of blade. Milk jugs are great targets, the plastic is thin and wont scratch or bend the blade as long as the cut is not outlandishly off. Don't try 2 liter soda bottles or large juice bottles though. The plastic is very thick and tough, combined with the positive pressure that builds up in this style of bottle will very likely damage the blade. Smaller plastic bottles will likely just fly away, like batting a baseball, as the plastic is the same tough stuff as the bigger ones and they are much lighter. The only real gripe about this sword is that the handle could not be removed. I'm not sure if this model has a removable handle as it is not listed as such. But to be fair, it's not a big deal at this price range. It is double pegged and the pegs can be removed for replacement. In my opinion, a great deal for the money.

The katana looks nice and is somewhat sharp, but I can't say much for its construction. The blade wobbles in the handle.

The sword is one of the best deals I have found. If you are like me and want one to play with but don't want to go broke, this is your ticket. The box it came in was huge, and the film on the blade was there however did not hinder the awesome ness that is this sword. Absolute must have for anyone who is interested in a katana.

Good sword for the price. It is indeed full tang and double pegged. The fittings are not plastic. This isn't an actual Musashi sword, it is made by a company called Musha. There is a small "CHINA" at the base of the blade, but it is hardly noticeable. Came with alot of dirt on the blade, but it was easily cleaned off. When the sword is unsheathed, there are small pieces of wood on them.
