Book Description

June 3, 2008
Sewing machines are speedier—but, increasingly, quilters are discovering that working by hand provides even more pleasure and superior results. And world-renowned quilt maker, teacher, author, and show judge Nancy Brenan Daniel has created an inspiring guide just for them, with ideas for 18 varied and beautiful hand-sewn quilts. Her detailed instructions cover it all, from making the blocks and stitching them together to adding borders and binding. Many of the designs come straight from Nancy’s own antique collection, and they’re pieced, appliquéd, and even stenciled. Several traditional and much loved patterns—including the Courthouse Log Cabin, Shoo-fly, Prickly Pear, and Windblown Daisy—are accompanied by a contemporary appliqué quilt and a small hand-embroidered wall hanging.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Many years of authorial experience—in teaching and writing—inform this newest addition to the quilt-maker’s library. Although Daniel does capitalize on the old and traditional patterns, such as Log Cabin and Whig Rose, she also melds her antique finds with newer contemporary techniques to create up-to-date designs. Such is the case with Music Lessons, a beginner’s quilt that fuses four old Monkey Wrench blocks with the embroidery pattern cat and bird discovered on a child’s coverlet. She also develops unusual twenty-first-century designs—Appliqué Medallion, for one—that pay homage in form to tradition while presenting a modern, streamlined adaptation ready for admiration. Each of the 18 projects includes level of difficulty, ranging from the beginner’s one needle to an expert’s four; there’s also an introductory narrative explaining the quilt’s origins plus sidebars that encompass fashioning tips (e.g., use fine-grain sandpaper as an anchor during tracing) and quilting information (the use of conversation prints). At the end, she rounds up the usual how-to’s—cutting, stenciling, and collecting, piecing, and finishing. --Barbara Jacobs

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, August 11, 2008

This review is from: The Art of the Handmade Quilt (Hardcover)
I ordered this book on a whim and really like it (though I haven't made any of the projects yet). It's a blend of historical quilts that the author has figured out patterns for and new quilts. There's also a large range of techniques used, so there's something here for everyone. The book is very inspiring and I would recommend it to anyone interested in hand-stitching or quilting.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures and simple to follow instructions, March 31, 2011

This book is filled with beautiful pictures, so it is nice to read even if you don't quilt.
I bought it for my niece (she quilts) and she liked it. She has a Kindle, but a physical book like this, with templates for quilt pieces, is nice to have -- she need only trace over the templates.
