I recently bought a copy of Handmade Houses, by Whitsett and Skinner, and while browsing the additional books that Amazon displays, I saw Handmade Homes (pay close attention!!), by Boericke and Shapiro. I have a copy of Handmade Houses, also by Boericke and Shapiro and ordered this one with the one-click feature. After I did so, I thought, "Oh, no, I just ordered another copy of Handmade Houses." But I didn't. This one was published before Handmade Houses and it is in a similar vein - lots of creative abodes built by back-to-the-land hippies in the 1960s. Some of the houses are architect-designed, but not many. Lots of creative touches in all of them, though. If you liked Handmade Houses and The Craftsman Builder (both by Boericke and Shapiro) and Woodstock Handmade Houses, by Haney & Ballantine, you'll like this one too. I didn't know it existed prior to seeing it on Amazon! Just don't get confused by the titles - I didn't think Whitsett and Skinner were very creative in their choice of titles. Perhaps they thought that since the original Handmade Houses book was so "old", they could "recycle" the title. Since this was Boericke and Shapiro's first book, I gave it 4 stars because there isn't a lot of text to go with the pictures. I liked their second book better but this one is a prize, too. If you like organic and whimsical architecture, get this one - it's a lot of fun to page through. If you are thinking of building a "cool" house, then there are plenty of ideas in the pages of this book.

An amazing book, for anyone whose parents brought them up visting houses like this. A visual feast of Wooden houses made with hardwork, love and soul. Every house was created with limited resources with sustainability in mind. Today we call that an eco house. In Art Boericke's and Barry Shapiro's era the called it classy.
