Product Description

Sometimes the world is a cruel place. This is especially true when you're out in it -- camping, stuck at the office, stuck camping at the office, whatever -- and you can't get an espresso. The people at Handpresso are just as irrationally insistent on getting their espresso anywhere, and getting it with a full complement of crema. The Wild Hybrid espresso hand press is their response to camping trips, long days at the office, and bad baristas everywhere. Just add hot water and a little elbow grease for cafe in almost any situation. The Wild pumps up like a bike pump and can generate an impressive 232 PSI, well beyond the usual 116 to 145 PSI necessary for making espresso. Its water reservoir is 50 milliliters. The Wild earns the hybrid designation because it works with either loose espresso grounds or pre-loaded E. S. E. pods, which are little packets of espresso grounds that eliminate the mess and hassle of juggling beans, grounds, hot water, and the Wild itself. The Handpresso Wild Hybrid is available in the colors Black and Silver.

I will start by saying that I did not purchase this through Amazon. However I wanted to share my experiences with this espresso maker.

I've only been using it for a couple of days, but I've found it to be easy to use and that it produces and very nice cup of espresso. I got it to use at work as we are not allowed to have any sort of heating element at our desk (read coffee pot or K-cup machine) and to be honest, the coffee in the Cafeteria is pretty mediocre.

Pro's:
--It's not hard to pump up to the proper pressure. I was worried about it, but I've never had a problem considering the pressures that you're reaching (around 230 psi).
--It's nice and compact.
--The cover is easy to get on and off
--You can either use your own coffee in the supplied filter or you can use pre-packaged espresso pods (available from a wide variety of companies

Cons:
--Tamping the filter can be a little messy (I'm doing it at my desk at work.) If you're in a kitchen its not really going to be an issue
--I wish the button to start the flow of water was a little more protected as I've been worried about triggering it accidentally. I've not done this yet, but maybe future versions could have a shield protecting the button.

In my opinion the pro's far outweigh and possible cons, which is why I give it 5 stars. In spite of a few little things I may have designed differently, I absolutely love it. It's easy to use and makes a very nice espresso.

I would definitely, wholeheartedly recommend this unit.

P.S. I'd also look at getting the optional thermos. It has an internal thermometer and shows you on the cap if your water is still hot enough to make a good up of espresso. Quite a nice idea on the manufacturer's part.

I was looking to make espresso while traveling, and thought this would do the job. I tested it out at home and found that it just didn't work for me. The espresso was weak, despite purchasing espresso ground coffee and tamping down multiple times.

Perhaps with more testing, I would have gotten better...it didn't

cleanup was also a bit of a pain, but that was to be expected.

I am coffee snob. A lazy, want-more-doing-less coffee snob. And a cheap one. I'm happy to pay stoopid $ for good espresso beans, but cannot bring myself to drop over $1,000 on a "proper" espresso machine. So when I came across this product my first thought was "hand pump, that's too haaaaard". The reviews convinced me to give this a go, based on the cost.

First espresso was OK, not great. Then I figured out that the filter (for using your own coffee rather than ESE pods) tends to concave in a bit: press firmly through when tamping and you get more coffee into the device. I also found the advice on many sites (heat the device before filling with water and coffee to press your espresso) equally important.

The coffee is very good--probably as good as you can make it without a pro machine and mad pro skillz. It's a bit more "exherting" than the French press, but the coffee is soooo much better. I've ordered a second one to use at work: I figure the savings will pay for itself in 2 months. I continue to be lazy and "steam" my soy milk in the microwave, then use a frother to whoop it good.

Haven't tried ESE pods yet, though have some on order. I'll use those when road tripping. Will be interesting to see what airport security thinks of it in my carry-on.

AMENDED REVIEW... 3-4 stars.

I've owned this product for a number of years and was very impressed with it at first. The espresso was not great, but acceptably good, and I felt that I got it at a very good price and it delivered what it promised. Another problem was that it cooled down the water significantly, but I'd just microwave it afterward.

It broke after moderate use within a year, but still under warranty. I had to pay for shipping but it was fixed and cost me $15. Several years later again, and with very moderate use, it is now having problems of not holding pressure sufficiently, but I think it's simply a matter of replacing 1 or 2 of the O-ring gaskets. These may be a little difficult or pricey to replace, because the are metric size.

Well built, robust and capable of producing consistent shots 'almost' on par with my beautiful old lever Pavoni machine. The real trick seems to be to use quality pods.

I feel like I have so much to say about my little friend I could write an entire essay. I'll try and be brief.
This little piece of hardware has changed my life. Well, kinda. First I have to say that the pump I use is the original Handpresso, which does not have the adapter to use coffee grounds. I bought this one because my original model failed and I just could not live without it, and the cost of sending it for repair vs replacing made the most sense. But then given my new purchase, I decided to try and fix my original, and much to my shock It was uber-easy to replace the failed O ring in the handle and BOOM back to delicious morning shots! Why do I love this machine you say? 1) it's beautiful, dare I say sexy. When you have that shaft in your hand you can tell it's quality, nothing cheap here. 2) it's so easy to use and minimal clean up. 3) it's fun! You should see the looks I get when it's sitting on my desk at work "What the hell is that?"(check out some of their YouTube videos, hilarious!) 4) it makes better coffee that the $400 Breville that now just decorates my kitchen counter. 5) No more freaking out at work wondering if I left my coffee machine running and reducing all my belongings to ash! (I had to give a neighbor a key over this one)

My only regret is that I gave this one away as a gift and never tried the grounds adapter, I have dreams about it though. I can say that the person I gave it to, LOVES hers as much as I love mine. Were thinking about starting a fan club.
