Book Description

7 and up2 and upHands-On
This beautifully illustrated book features art activities based on museum collections of Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Islamic culture, with early architectural and design styles adapted to paper, commercial tiles, and other materials. Good-luck charms, calligraphy, and traditional containers augment the simplified but authentic motifs found throughout the Moslem world. Children use paper, markers, and glue to reproduce the brilliant mosaic work of the Babylonians. They learn to create a wheel, board games, the ziggurat, and other objects pioneered in the ancient world. Full page color photographs, inviting illustrations, a history of each artifact, and stories, bring long vanished cultures to life.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-This title is divided into three areas, each of which highlights a few items of interest from the ancient civilizations. The book is visually appealing with full-page photographs in rich colors and detailed borders that mimic the art of the cultures being discussed. Most of the projects can be completed without much adult assistance. However, the instructions and arrangement are written more for teachers and parents than for children. Small black-and-white illustrations show some of the steps, but they are not always clear. Each project notes the curricular areas and includes background information and factoids related to the craft. Most activities are contained on one page, but several are continued at the end of the book, which requires flipping back and forth. The narrative style ranges from detailed to vague and often requires interpretation or improvisation. This makes the volume more useful to adults than to students. A good resource for teachers and homeschoolers.
