Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a transcendent masterwork that effectively merges diverse styles." -- The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, October 2010

"...that's what greatness comes down to in flamenco, as well as in jazz -- the courage to tap into deep emotions. Holland and Habichuela accomplish that here, and that's what makes them masters." -- NPR All Things Considered, November, 2010

"Generosity of spirit permeates every minute of Hands, which is a joy from start to finish" -- AllAboutJazz.com, July 2010

"Hands is a beautiful, patient display of musical brilliance...with the two artists finding a common language, an overlap between flamenco and jazz with ample room for improvisation." -- Soundroots.org, September 2010

"Think Rodrigo y Gabriela, but with real chops. ('A')" -- Philadelphia Daily News, October 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars Flamenco Jazz: Olé! Yeah! November 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Flamenco has improvisation within its complex 12-beat, 4-beat, and free gypsy and Andalusian forms, which have allowed some jazz explorations and the creation of flamenco nuevo. This recording brings together jazz bassist Dave Holland with guitarist Pepe Habichuela of the Carmona clan of Granada supported by other Carmona kin and Israel Porrina on guitar, cajón and other percussion, and palmas. In his early debut album, A Mandeli, Habichuela (a nickname = beans) showed his interest in jazz elements. Now, that feeling has matured in this excellent album. Although eight of the tracks are strictly flamenco forms, albeit modern, two [The Whirling Dervish and Joyride] are jazz compositions of Holland, the first recalling compositions of John Kaizan Neptune (e.g., Can You Feel the Beat). Throughout, the bass as melody instrument is established, and we hear a perfect fusion of traditional flamenco and modern jazz. Beautifully recorded and brilliantly performed, the lively, sensual, and sometimes serious music will appeal to jazz, flamenco, and world music listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great record October 20, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fans of Dave Holland world music offerings will not be disappointed. Those looking for a bit of flamenco guitar accompanied by the world's greatest jazz bass player won't be disappointed either. The tracks includes great percussion playing, but mainly this is Pepe and Dave's show. Nothing wrong with any second on this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Albums of the Year!? February 28, 2011
By Bruce
Format:Audio CD
I'm a big Dave Holland fan, so I was intrigued by this album - but nothing he has done before, prepared me for this one!

What struck me initially was how beautiful the sound is - the recording quality is superb and the music leapt out of my speakers as if the players were there sitting in the room!

I think the all-acoustic nature of the ensemble helps to give a balanced and detailed sound that is alive and 3-dimensional. The sound of the instruments comes from everywhere, rather than a small box in the corner.

Dave Holland's bass blends perfectly with the guitars and percussion to give a warmth to the flamenco sound that can often be lacking and then leaps out for wonderful bass solos that add variety and harmonic interest to the mix.

So, initially I am sitting there listening to this as a sort of Hi-Fi demonstration record as the sounds are so interesting - it is so refreshing when we are assaulted daily with electronic, manufactured music - to hear something that is so "organic" and so heartfelt.

But the tunes are all interesting - each one is a different type of dance and you are moved by rhythms as well as melodies. Of course the unique aspect of this album is the meeting of a Jazz master in Dave Holland, with a Flamenco master in Pepe Habichuela. This adds to the whole experience as you hear how each is inspired by the other and Holland's solos show him at his best and truly fired up by the music he is playing. As mentioned before, to my western ears, the overall sound benefits from the warmth of the bass when added to the mix - but the guitars are incredibly precise and virtuosic - they are crisp and rhythmic at all times.

What comes across most in the end though, is the love of music of all involved and of sharing musical heritages with each other - there is a generosity of spirit that comes across - of people happy to share their knowledge and work together to produce something wonderful to share with the whole world.

Surely a contender for album of the year?

I can think of two ways of manifesting jazz genius. The two approaches are exemplified by contrasting approaches to flamenco by Miles Davis and Dave Holland. Read more
