4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the board book, March 15, 2007
This review is from: Hands Are Not for Hitting (Board Book) (Best Behavior Series) (Board book)
I bought the board book before reading the actual book (hardcover or paperback) and was AMAZED by how much was left out. The board book is extremely watered down and simplified in order to fit in a board format. I usually don't mind this, but by the time my child was old enough to understand the message, he really needed the more than the board book offered. For example, the paperback takes pages to explain why hitting is not nice- it hurts people- and why people hit- they feel sad, or angry or jealous or scared. The board book does not. I think the reviewer who said that this book doesn't address WHY hitting is wrong, may have read the board book too. The full version offered here has several pages to answer that.

This review is from: Hands Are Not for Hitting (Board Book) (Best Behavior Series) (Board book)
I purchased two copies of Hands Are Not for Hitting for toddler cousins in our family who have discovered that they can become the center of attention when they start hitting people -- not to mention each other when the mommies get them together! In essence, this entire Best Behavior Series is absolute perfection. The books say just enough on the subject matter to get through to a child, but gives some fun-to-repeat lessons that can be easily memorized.

If your toddler has started to hit (as they all do) you really should buy this book. For a few dollars, you can end the trouble before it become an awful habit.

I purchased this book for my 22 month old who has learned that hitting is an "effective" way to get his big brother's attention. My son is fascinated with this book and obviously gets the message. We have a few other books from this series and love them.

5.0 out of 5 stars my toddler and his day care class love these books..., October 23, 2007

This review is from: Hands Are Not for Hitting (Board Book) (Best Behavior Series) (Board book)
We love this series of books! My 20 mo. old little boy was making his way through all these phases, hitting, biting, kicking, as most little boys do. He was having "time outs" at home and at day care. After a very long weekend away on a trip with a biting grandson and an exhausted mommy, my mom came across the book "Teeth are not for Biting" and bought it for us. After reading it a couple of times with him and then re-reading it after a biting incident the biting ended. Shortly there after we found "Hands are not for Hitting" and the hitting stopped. I was so happy with the results I bought a set of books to donate to our day care center. They have had great results too.
I really liked the gentle, yet straight forward way it addressed the behavior while offering positive things to do with your hands instead of hiting, etc. The illustrations are colorful and playful. Wonderfully age appropriate.
What's also great about these books is that at the end of each one there are other tips for parents and caregivers about how to handle the behaviors.
5 stars for this series!!!

My son started learning to hit when he's mad a few months ago (he's 2.5 yrs old now). It was frustrating because even tho we told him not to hit and that it hurts it didn't help. Time outs were useless b/c he'll just get more mad. So we bought this book after reading all the good reviews.

He is hitting less out of frustration and would point to the book and say "Hands are not for hitting". I love how the book shows other ways in what hands are used for like drawing, waving, hugging, etc. So we incorporate those things when trying to explain to him when he does hit. Now we don't just say "No Hitting". =)

This book is good for reading to your child when he/she starts to hit. I bought it for that reason and started reading it to my son whenever he would hit one of us. It seemed to work because he's not hitting anymore. However, I wish it would have said "Hands are not for hitting, they're for..." on every page instead of just some pages.

I have been reading this to my son (he's 3) a lot and now when he acts like he's going to hit me I say very loudly hands are not for hitting and I give him a high five or shake his hand and then ask what are hands for? He usually gets sidetracked and we start doing other things that the book suggests we do with our hands like wave, color, hug, etc. I hope he's starting to get the point. I use that term a lot at home now, I just keep telling him, "Hands are not for hitting." He has been doing much better, he hit my husband and we did the same thing, I'm so happy we found this book. I hope it helps along with the changes we're making around the house!

This book is amazing! It really helped my child understand that his hands are meant for kind and nice gestures. He loves it and reads it almost every night. I would highly recommend this to all parents. I plan to purchase other books in this series.

I was having problems with my 20-month old son hitting recently. At the suggestion of a friend, I ordered this book. I was pretty skeptical because time outs and other behavior modification wasn't working. We read it every night at bed time, and we have seen a drastic improvement.... after about three nights of reading the book, the hitting stopped. My son has very limited words (Elmo, mama, dada), but he clearly understands whats happening as we read the story, he waves his hands and says "yes" when I ask him if he likes to draw and play with his hands. Even if your child isn't talking, there is a good chance that they will understand this book, I highly recommend it!
