Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Written for those who haven't learned Illustrator or who are familiar only with one of the older versions, this hands-on guide takes you systematically through the package's Toolbox, Palette, and Menu tools. You learn how the Toolbox options let you create, select, and transform objects; apply strokes and fills; customize your view, pan and zoom on your image; work with the Blend and Auto Trace tools; and create graphs. You'll understand how to use the Palettes to modify an object's shape, position, and alignment, and work with color, gradients, strokes, and layers. The book shows how to choose Edit, Object, and Type Commands; apply filters; and manipulate Illustrator's views and windows through the menus. Finally, you learn how to import and export files, output your work to a printer or to the Web, and set Illustrator's Preferences.

You learn Illustrator 7 by following along with hands-on lessons throughout the book; the lesson files, along with demo versions of graphics software, are on the included CD-ROM. The book features a good mixture of drawings, screen shots, and explanatory text, and succeeds in uncovering each new or refined tool featured in Illustrator 7. If this package's interface is still a mystery to you, check out this book for a straightforward way of acquainting yourself and becoming productive with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good foundation for learning Illustrator., September 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hands-On Illustrator 7 : For Macintosh and Windows (Paperback)
As a newcommer to Illustrator, as well as to drawing programs in general, I found this book helpful. It covered the entire program at a basic level. It gave me everything I needed to go further and become a polished user of Illustrator.

I wish all book-courses were this easy to understand and had lessons that were as hastle free(the files were all there as stated in the text)as this book.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to start out on the right foot and build a good foundation learning Illustrator.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of the better "Hands On" kinds of books, June 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hands-On Illustrator 7 : For Macintosh and Windows (Paperback)
I never used Illustrator before buying this book, although I'm very familiar with Photoshop and other grapics packages. This book is more a reference manual than a "hands on" type of book. There are some simple exercises, which help to learn some things, but much of the book talks about features of Illustrator without in-depth examples for the reader to draw or create to really learn Illustrator well. If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive book on Illustrator that is less than 1200 pages that will introduce you to the program, you might want to give this a shot, but there has got to be a much better book out there on Illustrator.
