Gr. 4^-7. Beginning with a fantasy in which Jimmy discovers a marvelous ball that keeps shifting its shape, size, and color, this book offers directions for making three-dimensional geometric figures from simple materials: thin paper plates, bobby pins, and masking tape. The diagrams and instructions offer enough detail to break down the process into simple steps, leading readers to construct tetrahedrons, octahedrons, and more complex shapes combining the two. The forced rhyme in the story, and even in the directions, quickly becomes tiresome, as it leads to a lot of awkwardly twisted sentences. The colorful illustrations, though, have a wackiness and energy that kids will find appealing. An intriguing geometry activity book.
