Book Description

January 1, 2003 0942143124 978-0942143126
In this photo-filled book, authors Isabel and Marcelle, who are teachers in the South African school system, have captured the joy of learning through their use of 25 of the Brain Gym activities and 14 of the Vision Gym movements. The book shows variations for many of the activities, each taking a minute or less to do, and includes sections on the physical skills of learning and related academic abilities: visual and auditory skills for ease of reading; finger dexterity, spatial orientation, and shoulder-girdle stabilization for ease of printing and handwriting; and crossing the midline for whole-body coordination. Two Brain Gym participation stories: "The Spaceman" and "The Fairy Princess" are included.

Brain Gym is a registered trademark of Brain Gym International.

By K. Held
This book has been a godsend to me (and my son). He struggled with his printing in first grade; when he would pick up the pencil to practice I could see his little body start to tense up. I felt so badly for him. I took a 2 day course by Isabel Cohen based on this book, and I started using her techniques with my son for his handwriting practice. It made a great difference in his writing, but more importantly to me, he stopped tensing up every time he picked up a pencil. There are great charts for both printing and cursive in the book, and it even gives you the proper words to say to your child as you teach them.

I also used her techniques to help my son with spelling, and for a boy with ADHD and a brain injury, he has a 92% spelling average - not too shabby.

I highly recommend this book, and also highly recommend taking a workshop from her if you can. [...]

I was looking for printed materials about Brain Gym and came across the Hands On Photo Manual. I was particularly impressed with the layout as it helped me to understand how and when one uses Brain Gym with kids and the pictures clearly illustrated the variations with minimal written instruction. This is a truly parent-friendly book!

Teacher July 13, 2007
I found Hands On to go one step beyond Brain Gym, Teacher's Edition. Hands On brings eye movements into the Brain Gym exercises and offers many variations for the movements. I was especially impressed with the alphabet 8's used to teach printing and cursive writing. I would recommend this book to all classroom teachers.
