Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Hands on Visual C++ 6 for Web Development is a supplemental title that illustrates creative ways to leverage Visual C++ to take advantage of the Web. Step-by-step examples show how to create three real-world projects, each designed to illustrate important aspects of the development system's flexibility. Author Donald Doherty's goal is to go beyond the basic Visual C++ documentation to creatively exploit the integrated development environment (IDE) and component architectures.

The book begins with an overview of the Internet, VBScript, and JScript and explains how the Visual C++ IDE interfaces with the Web. Next, the text walks you through Quickbrowse, a custom Web-browser application that illustrates how to use components in Internet Explorer and work with the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) AppWizard. In the Logomagic project, you'll learn how to create ActiveX controls and dive a bit into the Component Object Model. In the final project, you'll create an enterprise message-posting system in two parts: a client-side ActiveX component and a server-side message-handling application. You'll learn about the Active Template Library, DCOM, and how to use the ActiveX control you build in a Visual Basic application.

Visual C++ is a very complex product, and this book only scratches the surface of what's possible. It does, however, introduce some concepts that you'll likely use time and time again. --Stephen Plain

This review is from: Hands On Visual C++ 6 for Web Development (Paperback)
This is the kind of book you MUST have if your bussiness are the web or component development, but be cautelous: this isn't for novices, nor for experts: is just for people with some experience, both in web technologies (server and client) and Visual C++ / C++ looking for a little more experience. News? Is some of the few materials available completely dedicated to C++, and there is a fabulous partner (here, in Amazon): "Developing ASP Components". Alone are some incomplete, but as couple are very useful. However, is important to say that there is one "trouble" with the book: something fails, basically the feel of learn new and strong stuff, that sometimes is converted in a face of "what could be this?". And that's it, in time becomes very basic, and others, too sophisticated. In general, a 80% satisfaction... or in Amazon terms, four stars. No more.
