This very well illustrated 66 page softcover book is an essential for anyone wanting to learn how to spin, how to make handspindles or anyone who would like to further their knowledge about this age-old craft. The author tells us about the many styles of handspindles, how they are used and how they are made. Further, she covers information about spinning different types of materials (including: cashmere, camel, mohair, angora, alpaca, linen, cotton, silk, and wool). There is a great section on spinning techniques that was very useful to me when I was first learning how to spin. This little book covers spinning from the Hooked High Whorl Spindles to Double Cross-Arm Spindles and from and Navajo Spindles to simple drop spindles. I was also impressed with the pictures and designs of all the different distaffs (again from plain to very ornate). This is a very complete little book and a pleasure to read and use!

If you are a beginning spinner or just curious about the origins of spinning, this is a great resource. I use the book a lot for reference when working with students of spinning or school groups. This certainly makes history more relevant.
