3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to look at, but has problems...
I bought my Visor Edge from the Handspring website and all was well until about 3 weeks of use. Like the other reviewers, my Edge completely crashed and would not do anything, even after a "hard reset". The on-off button wouldn't even work! When I called customer service, they told me that these types of 'crashes' sometimes happen. I owned a Palm for two...

I bought my Edge through the Handspring Website because they weren't available any where else at the time. I've been happy with it, even thought the first one crashed, and they had to send me a new one. They sent the replacement next day air and I haven't had a single problem since. I bought the Edge instead of the Handspring Platinum because the Edge was quite a bit thinner and had an internal rechargeable battery so I didn't have to spend a fortune on AAA batteries. The Palm V is the closest relative to the Edge in the Palm family, but I thought that Handspring had a better product with their Springboard module. I've already purchased the one step back up module which works great when you're away from your computer. In addition, I purchased the InnoPak/2V vibrator along with a Handspring belt type carrying case so that I can wear my Edge and have it vibrate for appointments. I figure that if it's on my belt I'll get that much more utility out of it. The only thing that I don't like about the Edge is that it's a new enough model that I'm not able to get all the accessories for it yet like the Targus foldable keyboard and the travel charger/synch cable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great PDA by Handspring, April 22, 2001

After reading the last 3 reviews, all I can say is how surprised I am that people have had problems with the Visor Edge. My experience with it has been nothing short of stellar.

The Edge is fast, has a clear screen, and feels rock-solid and durable. I have many different programs on it and it's fully Palm compatible. The lid is the best of any PDA I've ever owned, bar none; coupled with the fit and finish, it does a great job of protecting the screen. So far, I haven't felt the need to fold it flat to the back of the Edge, the settings provided by hadspring seem fine to me and well thought out.

I have one complaint about my Edge. The adapter for the springboard modules is basically a kludge. While it's not a bad design, fitting tightly to the unit and locking with a satisfying click, it's not a good one either. It makes the Edge far thicker, and it prevents you from using the lid as the adapter uses the same attachment point. Springboard modules are fairly big but surely a better design was possible.

If you need a solid PDA, buy this one. As for the other reviewers' problems, all I can think of is that I waited a few weeks before I made my purchase. Perhaps an early run of Edges had problems(?).

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Pockets, April 26, 2001

The Edge solved the one real drawback of the Visor Deluxe: you couldn't carry it in your pocket without looking like a total dweeb. The Edge's size and perfectly designed lid fit nicely into a shirt or jeans pocket without worrying about a case. Probably not the best choice for people who keep Springboard modules in it all the time, since the module holder is kind of clunky, but this isn't a problem since I use only the Backup module and remove it after I'm done. (Don't even think about travelling with a Visor without the Backup module.) I waited a month before writing my review, to see if I would have any of the reliability problems that were reported early on. Maybe the first batch of Edges had some quality problems, but it looks like those were solved before I got mine. I'd highly recommend the Edge to anyone who carries a PDA in their pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Discerning Choice, April 6, 2002

I purchased a Visor Edge a few weeks ago, and I must say that I am completely in love with it.

Like most people, I did my research prior to purchasing a PDA and was initially put off the Visor Edge by all the negative reviews I encountered. I noticed however that the negative reviews relating to the hardware problems were dated a long time ago, and I figured that Handspring MUST have sorted out their production issues by now. This convinced me to include it on my list to 'testdrive'.

All PDAs work pretty much the same if they have PALM OS.

Much like mobile phones, PDAs all essentially do the same thing.

So what is there to differentiate PDAs?

First of all you need to decide if you are a PalmOS or a WinCE person. I chose PALMOS because I dont need 2 laptops.

To differentiate between the PALMOS products, my list was: Rechargeable battery, size of screeen, price competitiveness, overall thickness, and of course sex appeal. For me, the Visor Edge won hands down (especially sex appeal) Sure it doesnt have the latest operating system or blue tooth capability (will you REALLY use this?) and I did not feel that double the price justified something that I would not notice or use.

Just a point of note: The first Visor Edge I got did not work! It refused to charge or power on. Luckily after reading the negative reviews I had decided not to leave the shop until I was satisfied I had received a working Visor. This proved to be a smart strategy.

As part of your research, visit visorvillage.com for all those free programs you can use with your Visor.

4.0 out of 5 stars So close, yet so far..., April 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver) (Office Product)
I recently sold my visor prism (at a loss!!) in favor of the visor edge. I have been a fan of Handspring for quite sometime, as I feel they are a better company to deal with than Palm and they make a better, more ingenuitive product.

About a week after I recieved my edge, I could not have been happier. It was small, quick, just about perfect. I didn't even miss the color of the prism, because I was overwhelmed with the creativity behind the edge. All was going extremely well...until just like "an electronics fan," my touch screen stopped working (it would just pull down the menu...)

That really marred my view of the edge. Because I am so enamored with Handspring, and because their customer service department is incredible (they are rushing me a new edge as I write this--before I sent out the old one!) I will stick this defect out as long as possible. However, I realize that most people are not as patient as I am, and thus I would not recommend the edge to anyone who cannot live without an edge for a few days unless they buy it from a brick-and-mortar retailer where they can get a new one right away.

To close, I will say that with the exception of this defect, this is the best handheld on the market, and everything when it is new has bugs that need to get worked out.

I owned a Palm for two years before 'upgrading' to this Handspring and nothing like this has ever happened. I am a physician who uses my PDA daily for storing reference material and patient data. Needless to say I'm quite disappointed that I have to suffer an inconvenience and wait for 7 business days for a new one to arrive in the mail. In general, it's a nice, sleek PDA but without a whole lot that's new or different from others in its class (the silent alarm's about it, and I'd never use it since you can't see the light blinking very well with the metal lid closed). Until Handspring is willing to address this issue that maybe there is a defect in their new product, I would suggest waiting a month for the Palm M500/505.

4.0 out of 5 stars The price is finally right..., May 28, 2002
By
This review is from: Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver) (Office Product)
When I first reviewed the sleek Visor Edge, it cost about twice what it does today. At the time, I advised buyers that this product was definitely going to come down in price so it can compete. Handspring finally has priced this product where it is extremely competitive with any product in the marketplace.

Functionally, the Visor Edge's sole advantage is its thinness. It is by far the thinnest PDA.
Functionally, the Edge is identical to the Visor Neo, except it is thinner with a rechargeable battery. This is the Palm OS equivalent of the Apple Cube -- a beautiful machine that didn't justify its high initial cost. As with the Cube after it was discontinued, you can now get a great deal on the Edge.
Buyers may also want to check out the discontinued Palm Vx, which feels better in your hands and actually weighs about an ounce less.
BTW, putting the Springboard module on this product makes it look totally unwieldy and eliminates the "cool" factor. If you like Springboard, keep your Visor Deluxe/Neo.

1.0 out of 5 stars Slim but unreliable, February 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver) (Office Product)
I bought a Visor Edge in June, and loved it. It is slick, slim and easy to use, with enough upgrades on the Deluxe I've had for an age to make it worthwhile - or so I thought.

In Novemeber it died. No explanation, just died and wiped all data. So I ring Handspring and get a replacement. This didn't even give me the chance to start playing with it - it was doa. I'm now awaiting my third one.

Luckily I had a back-up module, and use it regularly as I may not be near a hotsynch station as often as my paranoia now requires. And where am I using this data? I'm back on the trusty Deluxe!! It's a shame - I liked the look of the Edge a lot...

2.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love it..., October 4, 2001

After throughly enjoying the use of my Visor Deluxe for 2 years, I dropped it and broke the screen. I decided to upgrade to the Edge because of it's sleek looks. I bought and returned 6 -- countem -- 6 Edges -- each of them hard a hardware problem of some sort. The first 3 I purchased directly from Handspring. #1's backlight didn't work, #2's screen was not installed straight, #3 had a screw hanging out and would not slide into the charger. The next three I purchased locally at CompUSA. #4 would bring up the memo screen anytime a slight pressure was applied near the switch (as if the memo button was pressed), #5 had a sprung flip cover, and although the box was sealed, it had someone's data loaded onto it!, and finally #6's backlight didn't work. Sheesh! I am waving my white flag -- I have been beat!

So now, I have a Visor Pro on order. Wish me luck!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money, September 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Handspring Visor Edge (Metallic Silver) (Office Product)
After reviewing several PDA's for potential purchase I eventually chose the visor edge. It's size and expandability seemed to be just what I was looking for. I was excited when I received it and very happy with how fast it charged. This is where the love affair ends. When I turned it on for the first time, much of the type was cut off and could not be read. After an hour on the phone with customer survice, it had to be returned. The next one came quickly but without an infrared port cover. The next replacement's screen was scratched and the stylus was so loose it came off several times. The next two the backlights failed and all information is lost. I am now on my sixth replacement and forced to deal with it because my 30 days has passed for a financial return. It should also be noted that not all programs for this handheld are back-upable on the desk top, so when you lose it, and this visor seems prone to fatal errors, the information is lost forever. Even at the new prices I would seriously consider other options. You may have to pay more but I am sure it will be worth it in the long run. Oh, customer service has replaced every unit, but that's all they will do, and the frustration and aggravation has been worth more than that.

A Very Disappointed Handspring Customer
