5.0 out of 5 stars The Handspring Visor USB HotSync Cable
I just got the Handspring Deluxe (Ice) and it is absolutely great. I have had it for about 3 days now and I can't get off it. Anyways, I never had alot of room for the big cradle that the handspring came with. So i decided to order this. In my laptop case I could easily fit this in with all my other junk. The cradle took up too much room. This USB Cable is also...

1.0 out of 5 stars Good Concept... If it only would work.
I thought this was a great purchase for my handspring for those times when I was on the road and wanted to Sync with my laptop computer. Unfortunately, it did not work with my Visor Deluxe and so far I have been unable to understand why.

The trouble started when I went to sync and discovered that there was no HotSync button anywhere on the cable. Unable to start the...

4.0 out of 5 stars portable and works well, January 6, 2001

I got tired of packing my USB cradle with my laptop and Visor Deluxe everytime so I got the USB hotsync cable.

It is easy to use and attaches to the Visor securely. Unlike the cradle, the cable does not have a hotsync button. To hotsync, you just go to the hotsync application on the Visor itself and hit "local hotsync". I had no trouble with the hotsync if I moved/lifted the Visor. The cable stays in place. To release it, you have to press two buttons at the sides of this adapter.

My one complaint is that the cable is too long (about 6 ft) and this adds to its size, not to mention the hassle of having to uncoil/coil 6 ft. of cable everytime you pack it. If this was designed for use with a laptop 18 inches to 2 ft. would have been the ideal length. After all, you need both the computer and the Visor close together to hotsync.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get one if you travel--nice little cable, December 23, 2000

One of the annoyances of the Visor is the lack of implicit support for Ir synching. I'm a big fan of USB, but it would be even better if I didn't need to carry any extra hardware at all.

I lived for over a year with a Palm, and immediately dropped the cradle in favor of a cable. This was the first accessory I purchased for my Visor. Unlike the Visor itself, and the rip-off belt clip, this seems to be a very high quality product. It snicks securely into the base of the Visor, and is easily removed by grasping both sides of the connector, which releases two pins on the inside of the connector.

Many have complained about the difficulty of using the Handspring cradle. Take heart, this is an easy in and out every time--it provides positive indication of physical connection. The cable rolls up neatly and fits into a laptop bag.

If you have only used a cradle before, it may take you a couple of minutes to get used to a cable. It doesn't have a button. When you synch, you'll need to turn on your Visor and tap the HotSync icon (mine's on the System menu). Then click on the LocalSync icon. Other than this minor loss of convenience, it works just like the cradle.

Handspring support claims that it is possible to do an Ir synch, but I had already failed at the procedure they suggested: buy the commercial IrLink software and download the latest desktop software from Palm. If you do want to try this, beware that the Palm software doesn't support USB. If you want to experiment with this before purchasing the USB HotSync Cable, you don't have to worry about losing data when uninstalling and reinstalling different Palm Desktops and HotSync Managers--I went back and forth several times, and my data and configuration were not changed. Once you're thoroughly frustrated with that, buy the USB cable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy way to sync without a cradle, June 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Handspring Visor USB HotSync Cable (Office Product)
The USB hotsync cable is a quick and dirty way to sync your Visor with a desktop or mobile computer without worrying about a cradle. The cable plugs directly into your computer's USB port and connects to the Visor's sync port easily.

Rated at 4 stars because I've had difficulty with my cable disconnecting a few times if the Visor is moved during the sync operation. If you do choose this product, be sure not to disturb the Visor while the sync is in progress, to avoid any loss of communication.

I actually purchased some software to allow me to do IR hotsync - so I wouldn't have to carry a cable. However - twice so far - I've lost all data on my handspring - both times while traveling.

This is coming from someone who is ultra careful, I have spare batteries everywhere - and I change them out fast and one at a time - but for some reason it just happens... (I'm also a power user - use my handspring constantly - reading books, etc. so I've been through lots of batteries - probably more than most others).

If you travel a lot - and you trust everything to your palm (address book, schedule, frequent flier numbers, contact info, memo's...) you'll be lost in a foreign city/country when your memory dies.

This insurance is worth every penny - plus you can AvantGo while On The Go!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Traveller's best friend..., February 9, 2001

...is their handheld, and mine is my Visor. I am a consultant, and on the road more often than not. I keep just about my entire life in my Visor, so I want to sync often so I don't lose any data. When I used a Palm, it was great, no hardware needed, just IR sync to the laptop and away we go... When I first switched to the Visor, I had to lug around the cradle. Granted it isnt huge, but in an already stuffed laptop bag it can be unwieldy. This cable fits snuggly in the bag, and does its job perfectly.

My only complaint is similar to other reviewer's comments regarding the lack of HotSync ability without jumping through a few hoops with the PalmDesktop application, but other than that, it is perfect.

A very useful travel cable. Keep it in my laptop case for backing up on the road. Could be used as a primary cable at home, but wouldn't have the stand that comes with the original handspring visor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Connectivity, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Handspring Visor USB HotSync Cable (Office Product)
This really _is_ the way to connect your visor without having to do handsprings around your other equipment. I've used a 3c palm, and the annoying cradle really doesn't travel well. I've even had security guards at airports ask, how does this thing work. This simple line hasn't stopped me yet in an airport!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick synch, less hassle, June 18, 2000
This review is from: Handspring Visor USB HotSync Cable (Office Product)
This connector cord packs compactly, is not bulky at all, and allows for a superfast hotsynch which is what we really desire as we are ready to rush out to that last meeting, bringing up critical data on this new customer, and directions, even where your boss says the final dinner should be. The last thing I need is to carry another thing with me traveling, but this is light, efficient, and worth the money.
