Handstand Kids offers another excellent book for kids who like to cook. After their successful first cookbook (Handstand Kids Italian Cookbook, 2007), they have followed up with a Mexican recipe book.

Yvette Garfield created Handstand Kids as a way to help educate children to learn how to cook, to find out about other cultures and languages, but also to encourage community involvement. The cast of characters in Handstand Kids reminds me of the cast of Sesame Street with children of different ethnicities and one child that is even in a wheelchair.

In their latest book, Cricket Azima, a noted chef that teaches children how to cook healthy foods in New York City, developed the recipes. Azima can also be seen in Kiwi Magazine (May Media Group), a family magazine encouraging a healthier lifestyle.

To review a children's cookbook, what would be the optimum way to approach it? Well, to me it seemed obvious, give it to my children! They were very excited as Handstand Kids has a way of presenting their cookbooks in a fun and clever manner. The first book on Italian food was presented in a pizza box and included a chef's toque! This book was no different by coming in a tortilla bag and included an oven mitt! Both of my children were very excited as this was like the toy in the cereal box!

They looked over the recipes and decided to try a couple. My 5-year old loves cheese sandwiches, and he wanted to try and make the Grilled Cheese to Quesadillas. He felt that the recipe was easy-to-follow and after spending time creating his own meal, he was interested in trying something new (he's not a fan of sour cream). My 8-year old is an independent reader, and his motor skills are more refined, so he took on Tacos Terrificos.

The forward is by Chef Aaron Sanchez. He relays his thoughts about family meals and how preparing the meals together can become an intense bonding time.He believes that children look to their families to become healthy, happy and productive people. He also believes children should experience the cooking of a healthy and delicious meal with their family.

The Handstand Kids are featured in this book with a short drawing and autobiography of each child at the beginning of the cookbook.

Let's take a look at a few recipes included in this book:

One recipe is FARMERS' MARKET CHIPS with pico de gallo, salsa, and guacamole. This is an easy recipe that an adult and child could assemble together for their family.

All children seem to like tacos. There is a recipe for FISH TACOS. The recipe calls for a mild fish like tilapia. The recipe not only includes the ingredients, but also the tools necessary to make the recipe and the step by step directions.

Another interesting recipe was the GRILLED CHEESE which was made into QUESADILLAS. Since most children I know enjoy grilled cheese sandwiches, I think this quesadilla version will be a great hit with your family. It is so easy. You use tortillas instead of bread. You put the cheese between the tortillas and cook. How easy and delicious too.

The cook book includes recipes for desserts at the end. Again simple and delicious.

If you are looking for a Mexican Cookbook for your children to use which gives the details of cooking tools, ingredients and simple to follow step by step directions, I think you will find this book helpful. It is colorful and definitely child friendly. Have fun cooking!

I got these books as a gift for my 8 yr old niece and they are the greatest thing ever.
Not only does it allow her to be more mindful of how food is made but she's expressed more interest on learning about different cultures.
Our kids need outlets to be more open minded and accepting of things that seem foreign...cooking with these books is a great way to introduce that!

Oh and how refreshing to have a positive product in the market that can help reduce OBESITY which is a horrible problem with American youth.

I bought this book some time ago and put it on my son's book shelf. Over 2 weeks ago he pulled it out and said "let's read this". I thought it was charming that he wanted to read a cookbook before nap and bed time, but now, 2 weeks later, it's the only book he wants to read. He loves the characters, pictures, cooking equipment and most of all talking about the recipes. Now mind you, he's not even 3 years old, but this week he's been in the kitchen with me non stop as we whip up mexican dish after dish. Thank you Yvette Garfield for writing such an inspirational book that feeds both his soul and imagination. My son is cooking with all your help and knowledge!
