5.0 out of 5 stars Theater and Life, September 5, 2008
This review is from: Handwritten Theatre: A Series Of Brief Dramatic Pieces Originally Composed In A Small Black Notebook With A Fountain Pen. (Paperback)
We experience reality, we are entertained by theater. But when the line between life and theater is blurred by sincere emotion and talent to communicate both subtle and profound moments, we experience the art form the way it should be, whether performed on stage or in our mind's private theater. Only brilliant writing, as can be found throughout this collection, can offer us those little miracles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of hors d'ouerves, August 5, 2008
By
KR503 (San Anselmo, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handwritten Theatre: A Series Of Brief Dramatic Pieces Originally Composed In A Small Black Notebook With A Fountain Pen. (Paperback)
You know how sometimes eating your way through the appetizer menu is more satisfying than ordering a main dish? Or how the hors d'ouerves at a catered affair are often better than the rubber chicken they're serving?

Hand-plucked moments from a life lived privately, overheard conversations between intimates, a well-told shaggy dog story, familiar moments from YOUR life -- are like hors d'ouerves -- just as you register how great they are, you realize the experience is over, and you'd best go in search of more.

These short gems were created on the page, and then, as brought to life as a podcast/broadcast by actors with music and sound effects, they've captured the imagination of all who have heard them. They've since been adapted to the stage by a variety of small theatres.

In other words, these things work across genres because of their poignancy, their mystery, their drama, their comedy ... they'll stick to your mind-ribs long after you've heard them (at handwrittentheatre.blogspot.com) and once you've heard them you'll want to read them, to have them to pull off your shelf at any time. I loved the podcast series, and waited for each next episode, and now I've ordered the book right away. This is territory you'll want to revisit ...
