Information skills instruction is a fundamental and vital part of K-12 education in the 21st century. The Handy 5 is an effective model for planning, teaching, and assessing information skills instruction. If we truly believe that all students can learn and that the role of teachers and library media specialists is to enhance learning, new ways of structuring the learning process must include systematic and frequent assessment throughout the learning process. This five-step model provides a framework for planning learning activities to accommodate frequent and systematic evaluation for the benefit of the students' success. The purpose of Part 1 explains the Handy 5. Part 2 outlines the theoretical background and presents the research that validated the model. Finally, Part 3 provides useful examples of the model's implementation.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Designed and created by library-media specialists, teachers, and administrators, the Handy 5 began with the Big Six as a springboard to create a model for planning, teaching, and assessing the instruction of information skills. This model provides the basis for planning integrated-learning activities in all subject areas and accommodates teachers with frequent and systematic evaluation with which to determine student success. The need for collaboration between teachers and library-media specialists, and the importance and value of the library-media specialist in teaching information skills are key components. Part one explains collaboration and each step of the Handy 5. It provides criteria and rubrics for evaluation of each step as well as a planning sheet. Part two discusses changes in education from a strictly teacher-led classroom to a more constructivist setting through collaboration and more student responsibility for learning. Steps correspond to state and national standards. Part three provides a variety of model lessons and units that serve as examples for library-media specialists to implement. This book is thorough, detailed, and easy to use. The model is backed up with research, and there is an abundance of sample lessons and units. The language is clear, and strongly emphasizes subject integration. An excellent resource.
