2.0 out of 5 stars Not that good
I returned mine, it cooled the air a bit but was a hassle to keep re-wetting. Also I paid around $50 for it, was surprised that the plastic was cheap and not made very well. This thing is comparable to $10 or $20 "toys" you would buy at a convenience store, not a high end item. The fan is pretty loud and annoying at higher speeds. I bought the optional tube accessory...

When a friend suggested this product to me, I was a bit hesitant at how well it would work but when I ended up purchasing one and using it for the first time, I was quite SURPRISED! Because I use an AC Adapter (which I *highly* recommend), the airflow was much stronger. The cool air helped lower my body temperature and I felt like I was sitting next to an AC. Now, it doesn't replace an AC but I feel that it is better than a fan! I will also use this to dry my nails because sometimes my nail dryer blows *warm* air on summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars works in a truck!, August 23, 2010

I have been working for UPS as a delivery truck driver for years now. I have to say the Handy Cooler is simply the most useful gadget ever. If you have not known already, UPS trucks do NOT have air conditioning because of our frequent stops to houses. I used to keep little fans in the truck while I was driving but they barely helps. The hot air inside the truck just keeps getting recycled. My son got me the Handy Cooler last month and it has made my job so much easier under the hot weather. I usually keep a big water bottle in the car and jus wet the cooling filter whenever it gets dried up. I saw that there is a 6V AC output on the Handy Cooler, so I tried to plug a 6v car adapter into it and it worked! The only problem is that it was hard to place the Handy Cooler so that it would blow directly on my face. I had to use a lot of blue tag to stick it in place on the dashboard. However, I do strongly recommend this product.

OVERVIEW

Handy Cooler is the perfect travel/everyday must-have. It weighs a little over 4 ounces I would say. The size of the handy cooler is astonishing for an air cooler. It is about the size of a water bottle and the handle fits very well. I love how you can adjust the angle of the blowout direction. The air that comes out is cooler than fans, and it doesn't come off too strong. However, don't expect it to be as cold as and as powerful as a full-size AC.

GET IT WORKING

It works by evaporation. For cool air, you need to wet the sponge with the mini-bottle provided or wet it with water over the sink. I think it might even be a good idea to put it in the fridge for a while so that the air that comes out is even cooler.

BATTERIES

It can be powered by plugging it into a computer with the USB cord provided, or by 4 AA batteries which lasts about 5 hours. You can even purchase a 6V wall adapter for it.

CONCLUSION

- cooler than the most fans

- great design

- humidified air

- easy to use

- portable

5.0 out of 5 stars personal cooling, July 28, 2010

The handy cooler is very good if you need a personal cooling product. I put the cooling pad in the fridge and they add extra cooling. The great thing is that they are designed nicely so they can be carried anywhere. I used to own the sharper image neck cooler and that is nothing close compared to the handy cooler. I highly recommend this one.

My a/c broke down last week and it's a big problem for me! I have a table fan but when it's 90 degrees they just don't do it. Fortunately, I bought this with expedited shipping and got to me in 2 days. I have to say, this really works! It cools only a small space but the cooling is sufficient for 1 person. It's been a life saver. I'll be using this in my garage (I fix trucks) so it would not go to waste once I get my a/c fixed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice air-cooling blower, July 28, 2011

This review is from: Handy Cooler - First-ever Hand Held Evaporative Battery Fan in Black. Cools air up to 30F. Runs on batteries or USB. (Electronics)
My wife and I got a handy cooler after the first summer heat wave. We've been very happy with this item. My inlaws come in and it's a great thing for us to show off on. We just bought another one as a present for them.

I like the looks of this little blower. It has a little filter that you put water and it cools the air once the blower moves the air past it. It moves the air quite well, but does not compare well to a big fan. I wish it oscillated so the wind wasn't constantly blowing in my face, so I usually turn it intermittently on. The variable speed is good because I can adjust the speed to how hot I get.

This is a pretty basic fan. It doesn't have any LEDs to show if it is on, no remote, no autoshut off... so it would be nice if they came up with a second version. I'm not sure if they didn't include these features so it's less things that would break down!

PROS- cools air well, nice design, sturdy build, quiet
CONS- price, no recharageable batteries

This thing needs your attention when it comes to cleaning. You need to wash the filter or else it will start to smeel bad.

I've only used it for 4 months and only time will tell if it is built to last. For now, this is a highly recommended product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable cooler!, August 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Handy Cooler - First-ever Hand Held Evaporative Battery Fan in Black. Cools air up to 30F. Runs on batteries or USB. (Electronics)
The item was promptly shipped and it works properly. It probably doesn't cool more than 25 degrees but it feels much better than a normal fan. I originally only planned on using this when I was out for day trips hiking but was pleasantly surprised to find out that it can run off a USB cable and have been using it when I am at home too. It's very straightforward to use, but don't be greedy and try and `overfill' the sponge.. it'll drip.. so don't do that. It'll be nice if they came up with a version that had a bigger sponge so it'll last for more than 2 hours.

I am happy with the Handy Cooler and would recommend it.

I bought this to cool myself down at the office. The size is perfect, inconspicuous and quiet. Been working well so far and if it stays like this I'll buy another one for my parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works excellent for what i bought it for., May 1, 2011

I bought this hand held evaporative cooling fan to use in Acapulco Mexico. The temperature here is constantly around 85degrees and the humidity stays around 40-80%. I was not sure the evaporative cooling would work well with the high humidity, but I was happy to find out it worked great anyways. It was a life saver for my wife who was 8 months pregnant and always overheating. Since it is hard to find air conditioning down here she was suffering when the sun got high! The USB chord is really handy too, we just plugged it into the computer and saved the only batteries we had for when we had to go to deliver the baby.

The only bad thing about this fan was the first few(4-7) uses had a bad odor, which made me worry about what chemicals were still on it. But it is not too big of a deal, just don't point it up your nose.

This is a special fan that cools the air down. We bought this fan to replace our 10 year old desk fan that gave up on us last summer. It's very light weight and very handy to take around, but we use on our computer desk plugged into a USB. We happy with our purchase and would recommend it.
