Instructions recommend two people are needed to assemble this.

You can also feel the springs of the couch since the cover material's padding is not that thick.

It is also easily adjustable between 3 positions - flat, reclining, and sitting upright.

For a build-it-yourself convert-a-couch from Amazon, this couch is actually quite comfortable. Its multitude of springs provide good back support for anyone who needs to sleep overnight in the sleeper bed position. It is also easily adjustable between 3 positions - flat, reclining, and sitting upright. May not be the best sofa bed or the softest out there, but I would recommend it if you're looking for something in this price range to lounge on!

I was pleasantly surprised by this purchase! I give it 5 stars because for the money (~$350), I don't think you can get anything better than this.

Assembly: Straightforward, included instructions. I was able to knock it out (with help) in about 20 minutes.
Build Quality: Decent. Better than I was expecting for the $$$.
Comfort: Surprisingly good! Like I say before, my expectations were fairly low.
Misc: The sofa does smell like dead fish and gasoline mixed together. Per previous reviews, this smell will go away!

Edit: 2 weeks later, I cannot get the futon to return to the full upright position. There are clearly some quality issues that I did not notice when I originally wrote my review. At this point, the futon is essentially useless unless you want it to lie flat. Id typically return merchandise like this, but it is hard to repackage a 140lb box. Beware of quality issues!!!

I must say that I am pleasantly surprised with this couch. It's very comfortable and stylish. I haven't slept on it yet but will update when I do. The fabric is quite soft and I like the firmness that the springs supply with the padding on top. The two cushions are stylish and soft as well.
The only reasons why this couch didn't get 5 stars is because of the really bad smell that it came with. Kind of a mix between diesel and fish. Reminds me of a bad fishing trip...lol. However, after only a couple of days the smell seems to be going away slowly. The other reason is it didn't come with assembly instructions!!! Most annoying since I only had my iPad and couldn't get the video.

Purchased this sofa almost 3 months ago. So far it has been doing pretty well. Converts to bed easily (though we don't convert it too often), the back has 2 reclining positions, the cover seems to be water-resistant (we spilled tea on it and were able to quickly pick up the spills and there were no traces left). I give it only 4 stars for the following reasons: the cover does not seem to sit in place very well (a bit loose), but maybe we did not put it on correctly; there is no extra slipcover which would come in very handy.

Update as of August 2013: The couch has broken in the middle (there is a large "pothole" due to the broken spring I guess). What a waste of $500.

So, buying such a cheap couch/futon from an online source (so, without being able to see or feel it in person) I was VERY uncomfortable and uneasy about it. But I was in a sort of bind and really needed the futon so went ahead and did it anyway. I was even more scared when I looked out my window (because UPS was there) and saw the woman THROW the futon out of the truck and push it over gravel and through my carport (about 50 feet). Granted, I know this is not Amazon or Handy Living's fault, but I was then worried about the packaging and it the futon made it through all the travels it endured.
Anyways- I LOVE IT! It's by far the most comfortable futon I've ever been on in my life. There's no annoying bar down the middle when it's laid in "bed" form. It's really easy to lay flat and it even has a recline-like position that's in between up-right and laying flat. And finally, it looks great. It really does look exactly as the picture above shows. We are SO happy and recommend the futon to anyone wanting one!

This couch was a replacement for our playroom couch that was too large for the space. We specifically wanted a "futon" like piece since my nieces sometimes sleep over and the cousins usually like to sleep in the same bed. They are small (3 and 5 years) so all 3 girls fit nicely on it. It is easy to put up and down and it only took my husband 20 minutes to assemble.
As some other reviewers noted, the inside cover does rip easily (ripped on ours after only a couple weeks) and we tried to fix it with duck tape but I doubt it will hold. You can't notice it from the outside but the material is buckled in a couple places as a result. You can also feel the springs of the couch since the cover material's padding is not that thick. It is also difficult to spot clean as it tends to leave a watermark. I have rub with a dry cloth for it to dry without a ring.
Overall, this was a good purchase for the purpose and the price. Note: not for sleeping on every night since the bed, layed flat, still makes a kind of "V" shape, you would break your back after a couple nights.

We purchased this to replace a very uncomfortable futon that was difficult to make out into a bed. It is much more comfortable but the seams are coming apart on the seat part and did within a few weeks. I also noticed that it does not stand up well after some use in the seat section. I slept on it the other night with and find the crease is uncomfortable and very prominent. For our budget, it will work but certainly a lower quaility product. Overall, we are content for now because of the price.
