These are nice and work as intended. But the holes in the lid top are large enough for a fruit fly (and 100 of his friends) to squeeze through. Maybe you don't have fruit flies in your house. Maybe you do, like me. Personally I have not been freaked out too much by this, but I did cut some squares of cheese cloth to put under the lids. So I'm back to cheese cloth. So what did I buy these for? Well, I didn't know about the fruit fly issue. Nobody told me. So now you know.

This mesh jar lid fits on a wide-mouth canning jar and works perfectly for growing sprouts. I've used cheesecloth in the past, which also works, but this is more straight-forward and does the job well without requiring that I wash the cheesecloth fabric. This is a very good and easy solution.

I have this type sprouting strainer lid and used it for years and then got out of the habit of sprouting. I am getting back into it.

Perfect for sprouting
The holes in this plastic sprouting lid are just the right size. I can strain water out of the quart glass jar I use without losing the tiniest alfalfa seed.

I guess I overlooked the size aspect. Not all mason jars are the same. That is the moral of the story.

Impulse buy

Great idea
I make fruit water with herbs to sip on during the hot Texas summer....I purchased this to keep from having to fish large pieces of herbs out of my glass. Works like a charm!
