5.0 out of 5 stars Fun little book that is easy for anyone to understand, May 31, 2000
This review is from: Handy Science Answer Book (Handy Answer Books) (Paperback)
I really liked this book because I was able to read it! For a non-scientific person, that really means a lot.

Each topic is broken up into separate questions, which helps -- it doesn't get too complicated.

The topics are interesting, even to someone who isn't normally all that interested in science. On the other hand, my husband who IS very knowledgeable about science also enjoyed this book a great deal and learned little tidbits here and there. According to him, the science is "sound" in this book, and so he really appreciated it for that reason.

All in all, it's a fun book to have. Even our kids (ages 9 and under) have enjoyed looking at it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Believe it! A reference book that is hard to put down!, June 22, 1998
This review is from: Handy Science Answer Book (Handy Answer Books) (Paperback)
I bought this book, the first edition, as a whim. I never knew, though, how intrinsic science touches everyday life. I challenge anyone, at random, to crack it open and not find something gosh darn interesting. From collective nouns ("a murmuration of starlings"), to how celestial objects are named, to what the lines in a Unversal Bar Code mean, this is the perfect book for any parent whose inquisitive children ask, "Why is the sky blue?" (You can look it up for yourself.) I keep this book always close at hand, so I can figure out why my weatherperson feels that it is so important to give me the barometer reading or why hurricanes are named what they are. Enjoy.

I have three of these books now and I continue to not be disappointed. These books help answer questions that you may not think about but as soon as you read them you end up saying to yourself "hmmm that's a good question"! This book is very cool to read and if you have any interest what so ever in Science it will keep your attention for hours if you let it. Definitely not the type of book you would read cover to cover, it's more useful as a reference guide. I don't see why any college or high school student or anyone for that matter with an interest in science wouldn't have this book. It's a great buy and fun to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for reference or a good read, September 18, 2000
This review is from: Handy Science Answer Book (Handy Answer Books) (Paperback)
The topics presented in The Handy Science Answer Book are very well explained. It's a great book for anyone interested in science. When I first got the book at age 13, I thought I'd use it mainly as reference. As I read more of it I decided to just read straight through. Every topic was something I'd always wanted to know a little more about.

This is the ideal compilation of various scientific topics that is accurate, easily accessible, and quite complete. The numerous pictures and graphs and enthralling text support the quality. A great buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good as a potty book., January 13, 2002

Its a very good book, altough you wont find any question you have for science, it tells many interesting facts, and it is distributhed in many topics; biology, astronomy, geology, etc.

I found it good as a book to read while in the potty, but not too good as a reference book, well you can use it to start a good research on any of the interesting facts in the book, but youll only find short answers, and then youll move to other books on the matter..

You will also find it very interesting, because it will give you many topics to talk about with friends, or while meeting anybody..

For example...

Bears at zoos, doesnt hibernate, because they only do that when the dont find much food, and in winter season.

If anyone wants to know why the US has a reputation for being less intelligent than the rest of the world, they need to look no further than this book. Reading through it reminds me of several exposé-type programs I've seen about surprisingly inaccurate school textbooks. I'll give one concrete example here; you can find the rest if you're unfortunate enough to own this book.

According to p. 168, 1 quadrillion (1x10^15) BTU = 170 million barrels of crude oil. From p. 167, we see that 1 barrel = 42 gallons, so a quadrillion is about 7,140,000,000 (7 billion, 140 million) gallons.

On p. 169, we're told that 1x10^15 BTU = 180 million gallons. There's a pretty large difference between 180 million and 7 billion. If the book isn't accurate on this small, easily verifible topic, how can you trust them on the more obscure ones?

Don't waste your money on this book, and while you're at it don't waste too much on your children's textbooks either.
