The Perfect Gift For Music Lovers,
By
This review is from: Hang the DJ: An Alternative Book of Music Lists (Paperback)
Hang The DJ is a book of lists, which I usually love anyway, but it is far more interesting than the normal 'best of' collections and end-of-year reviews. Lists are compiled by famous authors, musicians, reviewers and journalists - and it's fantastic! My favorite lists included: Deserving but denied - 33 number 2's that should have made number 1. Jane's Affliction - 10 Ailments/Accidents That Changed Pop Music History. The Dirty Dozen - 12 great artists who are terrible influences. Apart from the fun element, this book also introduced me to artists I'd never heard of and I discovered rare songs by artists I already loved. If you're into Music, there is no shortage of things to enjoy - and much to agree, disagree and argue over! If you're buying a gift from someone who loves music - you really can't go wrong.

I love a good list. For me there's nothing like putting together a perfect top ten, but Hang the DJ is much more than a book of lists. It's a curated exploration of the music that moves us. Sometimes the music moves us to tears, sometimes it moves our bowls because we hate it so much and sometimes it just moves our feet! Angus Cargill who compiled Hang the DJ has picked a cabal of fanatical, interesting and enthusiastic music heads and let them write about "their" music. From punk journalist Simon Reynolds to Singer songwriter Kathryn Williams the contributors let you take a sneak peak at their record collections. Guilty pleasures and treasures abound! I don't think anyone has ever taken the time to compile the top ten Stuttering song ever recorded. That's why I love this book. It's a visceral experience. I wanted to press play on each and every page. For anyone who's ever fallen in love with a 45! Or moonishly made a mix tape. "Its time to hang the DJ." |
